They are talking more about acute compartment syndrome especially relating to that picture. Chronic compartment syndrome is the type which runners can get, which is similar to shin splints in terms of disomfort, but is from tight muscles behind the shin (as I have) but can also give numbness particularly to the top of the foot (which I don't have). Apparently the main thing that indicates I don't have it is that I can often train for a couple days ok before getting pain where as with CP I would get pain within a few minutes every time.
