Orienteering race (TVOC Shotover brown) 1:31:13 [3] *** 12.42 km (7:21 / km) +352m 6:26 / km

Brown 8.8km/405m

Tired sore legs after yesterday’s effort so looking for a steady run today without too many blunders. Cold and damp out, not exactly inviting but assembly was only 800m from home, what’s not to like? Slightly bamboozled by the tiny 1:10000 scale A4 map (two-sided for the brown course).

Found #1 with minimum faffage, always a good start. Overran the clearing for #2 even though I’ve been there a thousand times, d’oh. Slightly disorientated in the open area for #7 and ran a slow loop in the bracken to find #8 (described as a boulder/knoll, but surely a re-entrant?). Took a path R and then dropped down to the wrong thicket for #10, had to loop round, when going L and then following the valley up to it would’ve been a better choice. Slightly confused by the open area at #12 which was in a dip and obscured by a wood pile (needless to say I ran on the other side of the pile the first time around). A small loop for #13, from the R, when it would've been obvious from the L.

Picked a good line for the long run to #15 and ran up the correct re-entrant to find it but didn’t go far enough up to spot it and doubled back round to the next door one before confirming that yes, I’d been right the first time, ugh. Ran a high line for the longer runs to both #16 and #19 which was longer but surely faster than crossing the numerous valleys. Found #20 after going too far N in the open woodland near the bypass, corrected OK after a short dither. Had to slightly double back to find #22, as I’d run to a control on another course nearby towards the finish. A bit scrappy but I never got too far lost (unsurprisingly in my ‘home’ woodland).

Ended up with 352m ascent, a bit less than advertised (not that I’m complaining).
