Teering (Darkin River) 40:00 [3] *** 4.0 km (10:00 / km)
spiked:9/10c shoes: Innov8 Mudclaw 270

Guided H5 course. Excludes 27 mins of stopped time. Here is the plan (normal text) and what we actually did ( italics)
1 Rough compass, aim to the NE, try to spot road to east, check gully, onto spur, ( had to stop here, but eventually worked out we could see all the features on the map, including the isolated boulder the control was on ) run up spur, check clearing, look for rocks, keep left of same - don't run through small gully onto next spur
2 Fine compass, aim for rocks, then gully on slope. Turn left to next small gully. ( Actually did this but not intentionally. Went up gully, saw rocks. Hit steep slop, to right of control: we were in wrong gully, but saw flag to left. The key was the big hill )
3 Due east, make sure to get over ridge, when going down hill try and stay going east, so keep left on slope. Hit creek run up (or ENE) till large shallow gully, look for bare rock on far side. Get on the other side of rock features and run SE ( Did this. The bare rock was a great attack point. Relocated at the creek. )
4 Fine compass to try and stay on subtle ridge, pick off rocks. Pacing? ( Just went due south, and pacing worked a dream: 200m = 80 paces, I hit the flag on 79. The guidees need a more reliable estimate of distance and this is leading to big errors. Pacing is an important skill to at least be familiar with if you need it. )
5 Rough compass, contour, aim left to get on ridge, then turn right: second group of rocks ( Turned out to be a very difficult control. The ridge we were looking for was very vague. Got there by inspecting the hill tops on the ridge to our right. )
6 Due East should get close enough. Try and spot rocky hill to right. Pacing again ( As per plan )
7 Rough compass, try and spot creek junction or pond; fine compass from there ( Missed creek junction to right, but it was visible. Didn't need compass )
8 Easy leg to rocks near track, then contour left
9 Compass ( and pacing again )
10 Finish
