4 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:57:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Easy spin for the first hour, then a bit more pressure. Back on the SUV to smooth out the bumps. Shoulder felt fine.

Monday Aug 30, 2010 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Seems like a complete rest day is in order. Things still feel pretty broken inside, although they generally feel better when I'm moving around.

Sunday Aug 29, 2010 #

6 AM

Terrain (Trail) 2:04:00 [3]
ahr:159 max:165 (injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Change of Heart including 70:00@marathon effort. First 45 minutes (to the base of the climb to uppper CC Lake Park) easy, including a mile run with Yaya's Godmother, Joann Spitz who was doing laps of the lake in prep for the San Antonio marathon. Then got on it and felt pretty good for about 30 minutes. After that it felt like someone had driven a spear through my shoulder, but it wasn't really slowing me down any. Finished the pace section with a lap on the track to verify pace. As I had feared, it was slow by about 20s/mile. The HR was right, so there are obviously still some ventilation issues (or, I've lost more fitness than I realize).
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:02:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Cannondale Road

Easy spin in the 60" gear. Decided to see how well the shoulder would handle the increased vibration and extra weight support on the road bike. Felt fine for the first half hour then got uncomfortable in a hurry. Probably another week before I can ride in this position for any length of time. Just as well, since I really need to be focusing my training on running for the next couple weeks before starting to taper.

I think I may have been a bit hard on the Cannondale. Granted, even a crappy road bike feels like cheating when you've been putting around on a 29'er, but this is still a decent bike even after all the years, miles, and crashes. It needs a new chain and freewheel and the handlebars definitely need to be retaped, but everything else is working fine. For about $150 in maintenance, I could be back to a pretty nice ride. The dilemna, of course, is that I really don't care about road riding anymore. I suppose the smart move would be to sell it to someone who does.

Terrain (Trail) 2:23:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Chubb Trail, which I guess was just a bit ambitious. Haven't run it this slow in a loooong time and felt pretty crappy at the end. Almost feels like running at altitude, except that it hurts more.
3 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:40:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Had a few errands to run, so I did them on the bike. First time riding with a pack since the crash. Wasn't uncomfortable, but probably would have been if I had anything heavy in it.

Friday Aug 27, 2010 #

4 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:16:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Easy spin over to the Wine Chateau happy hour and back.

Not included in the time was a very short lunch-hour test ride of the Redline replacement, a Felt Breed, to determine which size I'll need. Looks like I'll be mixing it up in the singlespeed category this fall.

5 AM

Running (Road) 1:00:00 [2]
weight:166lbs (injured) shoes: DS Trainers

Nearly full moon in a clear 60F sky. Just about the perfect way to start the day. Except for the not being able to breathe bit.

Tried to put a little pace on it, but that wasn't happening, so I just embraced the slowness.
5 PM

Terrain (Trail) 42:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Sabino TR

By afternoon, I was breathing better and I got out of my other engagement so I headed down to Castlewood for the trail race. Felt OK warming up, but still expected to be hurtin' once we started.

Terrain race (Trail) 31:56 [3] 4.2 mi (7:36 / mi)
(injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Alpine Shop Trail Series.

... and it did hurt, but nothing like last week. Sprinting across the field to the trailhead was out, so I was mid-pack going onto the singletrack climb up Love. Fortunately, I know that trail well enough to run it blindfolded so I was ready to pass every time the trail widened. By midway up the climb, I had gotten through most of the congestion and was running a pace that felt pretty close to Tempo. The course followed Roller Coaster along the top of the ridge and I passed a few more folks there, By the time I hit the descent on Grotpeter, I had nobody in sight in front or behind. Backed it off a bit on the descent since it was really loose and then pushed a bit on the final half mile on the bottom just to get some more time at Tempo effort. Finished 6th, 1st M40. Very happy with the result, but more happy with the fact that it appears I can get back on the marathon training.

Wednesday Aug 25, 2010 #

5 AM

Running (Road) 27:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: DS Trainers

Easy jog round the hood.
4 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:17:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Same loop as yesterday, obviously with a bit more pressure on the pedals this time. Actually felt the effort in the legs for the first time in 3 weeks, though I had to use a larger gear than usual to accomplish that. Still, it's something. Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to make the race tomorrow and I was hoping to use that as a significant test of how I was doing.

Tuesday Aug 24, 2010 #

5 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:24:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Easy spin on the flood plain. Started to feel sore after about an hour. Cooking dinner made things a lot worse, which was odd since I wasn't using any heavy pans tonight. Had to take my nighttime meds early, so I won't get quite as much sleep tonight.

Monday Aug 23, 2010 #

7 PM

Running (Road) 58:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Speedstar 4

Easy jog round the hood breaking in my new shoes for the marathon (still holding out some hope, there). With my legs rested and the racing flats on my feet the lower half of my body was itchin' to go. Unfortunately, it was getting it's oxygen from the upper half of my body which was awfully sore today for some reason. The rib that's broken in the back was particularly problematic from lunchtime onward.

Sunday Aug 22, 2010 #

6 AM

Terrain (Trail) 1:56:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Greenrock starting from Fox Creek through Rockwoods, a loop around Greensfelder, and back. Glad to have this done early because it was getting toasty even by the 8:30AM finish. Slow, but definitely running and really not terribly uncomfortable. Still taking it very easy on downhills and clearing obstacles.

Answered a variant of the age-old question: if a tree falls in the woods and you're running a trail 20m away, does it scare the shit out of you? Yes. Wierd, too, as this was a pretty large tree and there was absolutely no wind this morning. Guess it's time had just come. Fortunately, it made lots of cracking and popping as it started to go so there was time to realize what was happening and make sure it wasn't falling my way.

Orienteering race (Park) 32:32 [3] *** 3.3 km (9:52 / km)
19c (injured) shoes: Salomon XA

SLOC at Laumeier. Fun course. Not as clean as I'd like given my reduced speed, but nothing to be upset about. Didn't bother warming up as I knew I wasn't going to be running at race pace. Ribs hurt, but not nearly like Thursday. I'm pretty sure Bill won and I expect Rob beat me as well. Have to wait on that as the epunch program was AWOL.

Orienteering (Park) 42:10 [1]
(injured) shoes: Salomon XA

Then did the score course with Yaya. At the start of each leg, I talked her through what we'd do while pointing to the featueres on the map. She took it from there and didn't seem to have too much trouble.
4 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:06:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

An easy workout that felt easy! Yahoo!

Friday Aug 20, 2010 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Felt reasonably good most of the day. A whole week without any medication during the daytime. Still need some to sleep, though. Now that the really big hurts are dissapating, some smaller damage to the shoulder is becoming apparent. Possibly a mild separation or maybe damage to the rotator cuff. I don't think it's particularly serious, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Thursday Aug 19, 2010 #

5 PM

Terrain (Trail) 30:00 [2]
weight:169lbs (injured) shoes: Sabino TR

Warmup. A bit longer than I ordinarily would on such a hot day because I've noticed that my stride smooths out after I get used to how much it hurts to breathe.

Terrain race (Trail) 29:50 [3] 3.6 mi (8:17 / mi)
(injured)

Alpine Shop trail series at Castlewood. The plan all along was to use these as tempo workouts. Wasn't able to run quite that intensity - probably closer to marathon effort. Very strange to be breathing like it's a 3000 on the track and feel almost nothing in the legs.

Good: I can run trails again, and run them reasonably hard. Managed to finish mid-pack. It hurt like hell to breathe deep, but no damage was being done. Right arm can swing almost normally. While I had to step carefully on the downhills (a fall now would be disaster), I was able to make the little balance adjustments that keep you straight on a trail.

Bad: About a minute/mile slower than I'd like, but one takes what one gets at this point.

Ugly: Damn, that breathing hurt.

Wednesday Aug 18, 2010 #

5 PM

Cycling (Road) 1:05:00 [3]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Includes about 10 minutes of decent tempo on the flood plain.

Tuesday Aug 17, 2010 #

5 PM

Running (Road) 25:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: DS Trainers

Same loop as yesterday and actually managed to hold a sub-10-minute-mile pace. Still seems like a whole lot of work for 9:50's, though.

Monday Aug 16, 2010 #

7 PM

Running (Road) 27:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: DS Trainers

Back in STL. Easy jog round the hood. Except it wasn't very easy, just really really slow. Seems to work best if I don't swing my right arm at all. Fortunately, I'm pretty good at this since I normally hold my baseplate in my right hand.

Sunday Aug 15, 2010 #

5 PM

Running (Road) 32:00 [1]
(injured) shoes: 2140 White

Yahoo! Actually found a moderately comfortable position to sleep in last night and got five straight hours. Best since the crash and has me in a much better mood. I think being just a bit tired physically helped, too.

Went for an easy walk in the afternoon.

Saturday Aug 14, 2010 #

7 AM

Terrain (Trail) 7:58:30 [2] 28.5 mi (16:47 / mi)
(injured) shoes: Salomon XA

Howl at the Moon 8-Hour, stayed in the running division, but I walked almost all of it. I won't diginify this by calling it a race, but walking briskly for 8 hours was harder than I expected. I'd estimate my HR was above 90 for almost all of it and probably above 100 for fair stretches. Wore the sling the whole way which I think was a good call, despite the heat. Had to jog just a little bit at the end to get the last lap in before the time limit.

As ultrarunners are notoriously bad pacers and the heat was fairly severe, I was passing more people than passed me for the second half of the race. Of course, they were ahead on laps, but it was still nice to be keeping up. Finished near the bottom obviously, but I know I wasn't last, so that's something.

Since I don't believe in mixing pain medication and exercise, I had to go without the former. By midday the pain in my ribs was very noticable, but it didn't get any worse and it was just the normal, "Hey, we're busted down here" as opposed to, "Stop you idiot, you're making this worse." Actually managed to get through the post race festivities and the drive back to Champaign before taking any meds.

Friday Aug 13, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Drove to Champaign late afternoon. Longest stretch in a car since the accident. Felt OK.

Thursday Aug 12, 2010 #

Note
weight:170lbs (injured)

No idea if any the G value contains any useful information. Inflammation has been dropping rapidly this week (I was in the mid-180's a few days ago) and I don't know how much is left.

Feeling pretty good today, but it was so hot I skipped the midday walk. After work it was time get in the aborted trip to India Palace that was supposed to happen on my birthday. Back home we watched the finale of So You Think You Can Dance while drinking Dom Chandon Rose Brut, then watched Project Runway while eating an absurdly rich brownie I baked. Just the right mix of camp and quality.

Wednesday Aug 11, 2010 #

11 AM

Running (Road) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Spurred by a surprising amount of unsolicited advice, I went for a walk at lunchtime. Good news is that I don't have to have my arm in a sling anymore (though I still can't carry anything with it). Bad news is that the ribs are still barking big time.
7 PM

Running (Road) 42:00 [1]
(injured) shoes: 2140 White

By evening, my ribs were feeling better, so I went for another walk. Put a bit of pace on it this time. Still definitely walking, but a full three miles at under 15/mi is encouraging. After that, I decided to try out a variant of Bill's advice. I had no French sparkling chilled, but a perfectly good Cava was at the appropriate temperature, so Kate & I split that along with a tripple cream goat brie.

Tuesday Aug 10, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Seemed to slip back a bit today, or maybe I just took less ibuprofen. Either way, I was hurting.

Monday Aug 9, 2010 #

4 PM

Running (Road) 14:00 [1]
(injured)

Walking the mile home from the store with about 10 pounds of groceries. I do this several times a week and don't think much of it. However, I forgot that, since I couldn't carry anything in my right arm, my right obliques would have to be pulling the whole way home to balance the load. As there are four broken ribs under said muscles, it made for a good HTFU session.
7 PM

Other (Lawn) 15:00 [1]

Front only. Once I got the mower started (EZ Pull my ass), it didn't suck any worse than I expected it to, which is to say it was the mental equivalent of a moderately hard workout on a day you really don't feel like going at all. And, as with such workouts, when it was done, I was glad to have done it just to prove that the body is quite capable of doing things that the brain would rather not.

Sunday Aug 8, 2010 #

2 PM

Swimming (Therapy) 30:00 [1]
(injured)

Did my range of motion exercises at the pool. Much easier when I didn't have to be holding my right arm up with my left. Went for about 20 minutes, took a break, and then did another 10. Didn't try to push past the pain point, just lots of back and forth up to it.

Saturday Aug 7, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Slept better, although very stiff on waking since I can't move at all while i'm sleeping. Generally feel like I've turned a corner on recovery. Back on over-the-counter meds (vitamin-I) and all internal functions seem to be back on line. Just in time, too, since it saves the wine dinner with the Langton's tonight.

Friday Aug 6, 2010 #

2 PM

Note
(injured)

Walked to the grocery store and back to get some fruit (a little over a mile round trip). Moving very slow (took around 45 minutes), but it was nice to at least be moving around outside.

Thursday Aug 5, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

Pain was much worse today. I guess I got off the prescription meds too quick. I did well enough in PT that the doctors agreed I should be discharged from the hospital. Activity limited until I get a follow up on the lung next week. Looking back at past rib breaks, it appears that I should expect to be out of running for 2-3 weeks. Since the collarbone makes riding on the road inadvisable, that may be too much time off to save the marathon. I'll try setting up the trainer and see what can be done.

And, on a more humorous note, here I am receiving my birthday present from Yaya: a multi-tool for my bike which came through the wreck with absolutely zero damage while I'm in the hospital.

Wednesday Aug 4, 2010 #

Note
(injured)

A fun filled day at the hospital. Morning was rough, but by afternoon I was doing fine on just mild anti-inflamatories. They would release me except they're still not sure what to do about the collarbone. Normally, you just let it heal on it's own, but there is so much overlap in the break, the fear is that it will heal much shorter and limit range of motion. A plate may be in my future.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2010 #

4 AM

Running (Track) 49:00 [4]
shoes: Grid A2

8x200@40 200R.

Even worse than last night! The temp dropped all the way down to 82F, but there was fog. Yes, fog at 82 degrees. I didn't think that was physically possible in an open-air environment. Anyway, it wasn't a problem for running 200's, but I sure am glad the schedule calls for biking for the next couple days. Running in this stuff sucks.
6 PM

FatTire (Trail) 57:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Crazy hot, so I moved the long ride to tomorrow and just went out for a nice, easy spin on the trails at CC Lake. Trails were in such great shape, I started pushing a bit on the fast sections figuring I should take the opportunity to get in some bike handling practice. Four broken ribs, snapped collarbone, and punctured lung later, that doesn't seem like such a good call.

Managed to walk out to the road and call Kate who came and took me to the hospital. Turns out that lying down for a ct scan when you've just broken a bunch of ribs hurts. A lot.

Monday Aug 2, 2010 #

9 PM

Running (Track) 1:01:00 [3]
ahr:158 max:164 shoes: Grid A2

2x3000@11:55 400R. Ran these on the track because I wanted to make sure I haven't been kidding myself about tempo pace. Good news is that I'm spot on (maybe even a few tics/mile fast). Bad news is that even waiting until 9:30 at night wasn't enough to get in more than two 3K's. The schedule called for 4, but I was overheating so badly by midway through the second, I decided to call it a night and hope to shoehorn in some quality work in the morning.

Sunday Aug 1, 2010 #

10 AM

FatTire (Trail) 1:55:00 [2]
shoes: Bike:Kona Hardtail

Annual sort of Epic Birthday Ride & BBQ. Very sort of this year as Bangert Island is still closed due to flooding so we were limited to this side of the Missouri. Still, a good time on the trails at CC Lake with David, Jeff, and Carrie. Spirited pace at times.
6 PM

Cycling (Road) 17:00 [2]

David wound up with 2 bikes and no car at my house at the end of the cookout. If you know David you know that there's no point in going into how these situations arise - it's sort of a lifestyle of inconvenience. Anyway, I offered to ride one of them home since I wanted to get in an easy jog this evening.

Some might say I blew a chance by not proceeding to rack the bike on the car and go over to Castlewood. After all, how often is one left in possession of a Gary Fisher Superfly Hardtail, even if it is slightly too small. However, I've never been terribly enamoured with carbon bikes and now that I actually have to pay for these machines, I don't think I want to develop a taste for them.

At any rate, it doesn't feel like it's any lighter than the Kona and I don't mind the vibration from aluminum, so I think I'm clear of any bike envy for the moment. Which is all a very long way of saying I rode fairly directly to his house in running shoes without adjusting the seat.

Running (Road) 41:00 [2]
shoes: 2140 White

And then ran back via the 270 culvert with my helmet in my pack.
