Picking Sitka seed cones off branches at Ledmore Nursery all day.
More tiring than I anticipated - it got a bit competitive with how many buckets and sacks you could fill !!
In the end 20 of us volunteers (office-based staff) collected approximately 11.5 million seeds which is valued at about £60,000.
To put this in perspective, over 40 folk are working at Ledmore Orchard for 10 days. We have 2 other nursery sites where similar is taking place.
I am told that this 10 days of work will bring in approximately £2-3million worth of Sitka seed and cover Scotland's requirements (ours and private contractors) for the next 4-5 years. I have sown my seed for this year ;-)
