Mountain Biking race 44:53 [3] 11.0 mi (14.7 mph) +140m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

C2C Day 4 Stage 1 - Bike to Swainby

Running race 1:42:13 [3] 8.1 mi (12:37 / mi) +655m 10:05 / mi

C2C Day 4 Stage 2 Run over Carlton Bank. Feeling much more sprightly today. Didn't overdo it but big improvement on the last two days. And beautiful morning over the moors - misty inversion and sun :-)

Mountain Biking race 2:59:06 [3] 28.0 mi (9.4 mph) +528m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

Ride over north york moors. Still feeling much better and eating things :-). Chain had other ideas and kept hopping behind my casette. Bit of bike faff each time. Then coming out of Glaisdale I bent a link - thankfully got it back into working order as didn't have much chain length to spare and my extra links had been removed from my saddle bag..... Very smooth and gentle ride from Glaisdale to Whitby for chain preservation. Tried to stick to the 3 gears that put least stress on the chain. Got away with it..

Running race 1:17:51 [3] 7.16 mi (10:52 / mi)

C2C Day 4 Stage 4 Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay. Lovely views along the cliff path, still moving ok. Overtook all but one of the remaining people to have started before me that day and didn't get caught by anyone, much more like it, shame it took til the last day....legs a lot less battered than they might have been as a result though... 3rd female solo today, not bad as a come back with the bike mechanicals

Running race 2:36:58 [3] 9.5 mi (16:31 / mi) +520m 14:07 / mi

C2C Day 3 Stage 1 Run over nine standards. It took me 3hrs to eat what might be considered a meal last night. Hoped I'd feel better this morning but still feeling sick as I set off. First run was a trog, nothing in the legs, feeling rough and rough underfoot so had to be careful on the ankle. As a guide...in 2009 I ran the longer route into Keld (about3 miles further) in 2hrs38:55. So this was a bit of a write off all in all.

Mountain Biking race 2:14:31 [3] 18.2 mi (8.1 mph) +670m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

C2C Day 3 Stage 2 - MTB to castle Bolton. I took this very steady and enjoyed the good descents around. Resigned to a steady pace the rest of the day to see how it went. Managed to eat something on this stage :-) (it was only a handful of sweets)

Mountain Biking race (On road) 2:15:32 [3] 29.61 mi (13.1 mph) +283m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

C2C Day3 Stage 3 - Ride to Northallerton. Set off steady and accidentally let my mind wander in the middle somewhere, Alan came flying past and I was really dawdling. Picked it up a bit after that and in the last few miles finally felt like I might be able to eat something proper!

Mountain Biking race (On Road) 27:44 [3] 5.9 mi (12.8 mph) +201m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

C2C Day 2 Stage 1 - Ride to Thirlmere. Struggled to eat last night or this morning so still cramming porridge in on the start line. Took it reasonably steady until the van had passed as was getting a bit worried I would beat my support crew there...

kayaking race 53:01 [3] 4.15 mi (12:46 / mi)

C2C Day 2 Stage 2 - Paddle down Thirlmere. Again good paddle, bad portage undoing the good work.. Feeling sick by the end of the lake

Running 2:09:58 [3] 7.8 mi (16:40 / mi) +806m 12:37 / mi

C2C Day 2 Stage 3 - Run over Helvellyn. Oh dear...lurgy from last weekend well and truly catching up with me, feeling awful, very sick, really slow up the hill and even slower down with a walk near the end. very nearly gave up on the way up then saw Kim with some words of encouragement an continued.

kayaking race 1:52:16 [3] 7.9 mi (14:13 / mi)

C2C Day 2 Stage 4 Paddle down Ullswater - very slow off the mark down the river but ok once paddling. Still feeling rubbish but where else are you going to go once you've set off down the lake than the other end?

Mountain Biking race 2:22:51 [3] 27.0 mi (11.3 mph) +673m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

C2C Day 2 Stage 5 Ride from Pooley Bridge to Kirby Stephen. Seemed a rather long way given the finish line couldn't come soon enough. Fell in a ford so got my nice dry clothes wet. Failed to eat as still feeling sick. Finished just after Helen who had had a tremendous crash and removed a lot of skin. I was apparently sheet white with blue lips...a good look...

kayaking race 1:49:06 [3] 5.52 mi (19:46 / mi)

C2C Race Day 1 - Kayak. Terrible start after my paddle space was taken by Ant, so passing people all the way to the head before st bees. Was gaining on Sally and Helen when we hit the swell. Fine with the massive swell but too many side on waves knocking me in. Thought I'd well and truly lost it as in 2011 this was done in just over an hour so when eventually I was put in a boat within sight of the beach I figured I'd already lost enough time for it not to matter I was taking 120% slowest time. As it turns out it took 1:20 this time so wasn't a million miles off considering the amount of swimming I'd done. Ah well. Only the first stage!

MTBO race 1:34:33 [3] 19.8 mi (4:47 / mi) +594m 4:22 / mi
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

C2C Day 1 Stage 2 - ride from st bees to Crummock Water. Much more like it!

kayaking 1:43:54 [3] 5.24 mi (19:50 / mi)

C2C Day 1 Stage 3 - so kayak disaster 2. Well, not actually a problem with the kayaking this time, flew down both lakes...however 17kg 6m boat is too much for me to carry for over a km. I think I lost about 30mins to the others doing this Gah! I almost cried when there was a kissing gate between me and Buttermere - I could see it but I had to lift the boat up and over before I could get paddling again. Thank god support crews could help with it up the field, I don't think I could have lifted it again...

Running race 2:37:51 [3] 9.9 mi (15:57 / mi) +1092m 11:52 / mi

C2C Day 1 Stage 4 - run over robinson, dale head and cat bells to nicol end. Much more like it. Managed QOM up robinson in 43:37 even having eaten a banana and jog/walked the first field to get the ankle warmed up. Cruised over Dale Head and High Spy but had to take the descents carefully. Started to feel a bit ropey around high spy but got to nicol end after a reasonable run.

Swimming 22:29 [3] 1.5 mi (14:59 / mi)

Swim from Nicol end then run into Keswick - feeling sick by the end. Pretty glad my weakest day was out of the way!

Note
(rest day)

Not the race prep I'd hoped for. Going to have to try out the bike wheel set up tonight before it goes to the bike tree tomorrow but stomach still a bit dodgy. The dangers of support crew duties....
3 PM

cycling 1:49:37 [2] 23.15 mi (12.7 mph) +432m
shoes: Massi Carbon Pro

Needed to go to rother valley so combined that with testing out wheels. Didn't feel too bad all things considered and the tyres are ace! Now, to decide if they can handle askham fell....

Note

Sabs BG supporting - was meant to do leg 5 but weather (howling gales) meant she called it a day at the foot of gable after almost being blown off kirk fell....she was still just about on time at that point - good effort!

Running 1:03:58 [2] 5.1 mi (12:33 / mi) +320m 10:30 / mi

DPFR run from top of Howden. Very off road up to Margery Hill - perfect for testing the ankle which loves the soft terrain and is ok on anything but have to be a bit slow and steady through reeds when you can't see where your feet are going. Definitely getting there....Tib post sore after but seems ok this morning

6 PM

Running 17:25 [2] 2.01 mi (8:40 / mi) +61m 7:55 / mi

Running 32:32 [2] 4.03 mi (8:04 / mi) +107m 7:27 / mi
shoes: Haglofs Trail Shoe Pink

Run number 2 - required a steadier start as felt like I had a wooden ankle but by the stables was feeling better. Increasingly feeling more comfortable and almost spot on by the end. Cornering better than last time and no foot pain so definite improvement. Finished and didn't feel like I'd pushed the limit of its abilities so thats good.
2 PM

cycling 1:14:56 [3] 18.17 mi (14.5 mph) +500m

You read correctly! An actual run :-) No swimming pool or anything!

It's been so long since I logged one AP has shuffled it to the bottom of my activities...

Gentle reintroduction through bolehill and back over lydgate. First couple of miles fine, ankle a bit stiff. Tib post not good with cornering or off camber but that wasn't that much. Off road better than tarmac. Last half a mile tib post sore in the foot insertion. Not sure if this is due to distance/pace or the fact I was running downhill.

kayaking 29:23 [2] 2.4 mi (12:15 / mi)

Trying out the Gaisford at Rother Valley. Made it just in time to fit 30mins in before they shut. Either Thursdays crash course has sorted me right out or its a bit more stable than the Epic. A good thing for my average speed and confidence I can actually paddle it for the C2C....

Thursday Aug 1, 2013 #

kayaking 5:30:00 [3] 13.0 mi (25:23 / mi)

My first outing in a surf ski - in the deep end with an epic V10 in the North Sea with Andy as safety boat/audience for watching me fall in/telling me how to get back in. Spent the first 2hrs getting to grips with staying upright, then the last 3.5 paddling in rougher water and riding the swell. Only one hairy moment of getting washed a bit far out in rather choppy water while I desperately flailed trying to get back in whilst the waves fought against me managing to....took me 8minutes to get back in! Shall not be repeating that part!

Great fun by the end and could handle most of the swell/waves by then. Mega wetsuit sunburn could look comical in my running kit....
