Saturday May 31

Event: 10 Under The Ben

Cycling race 4:14:45 [5]53.47 km (4:46 / km) +975m 4:22 / km
10 hour MTB endurance race. In a pair so doing alternate laps.
Some areas technically difficult - walked some sections, but on 2nd & 3rd lap completed more sections on bike.

Will need to go back to this area as pressure of being in a race & other faster riders catching up stopped me taking the time I needed to negotiate some technical sections. Really pleased that I tackled some sections on subsequent laps - benefit of knowledge of what was approaching & riding with others & able to observe lines. Need biking buddies to go out with regularly!

Friday May 30

Horse riding 1:15:00 [0]
Good walk canter transitions - but starting to anticipate, especially at certain points on route!

Thursday May 29

Horse riding (Hacking) 1:05:00 [0]
Some canter work with company. Still kept manners!

Wednesday May 28

Cycling (Trail skills) 3:00:00 [3]
Skills training session with Iain from MB7.
Brushing up on basics learned from course last year, then extending skills to cope with steps & drop offs.

Tuesday May 27

Climbing 3:00:00 [4]
shoes: Boreal Joker
Lead climbing x3 - managed short 6a climb on "rippled" wall.
New bouldering routes! Need some work to master...... and fresh arms!

Monday May 26

Horse riding (Hacking) 40:00 [0]
Very windy = strong, spooky horse. Still minding manners tho!

Sunday May 25

Orienteering race (Relay - First leg) 40:16 [4]*** 4.4 km (9:09 / km) +295m 6:51 / km
shoes: Adidas Swoop
Much happier with map reading today.
Doubtful over route towards end & should have trusted initial decision - ended up at knoll too far South of control. Other small errors but forgivable!!

Saturday May 24

Event: Scottish Championships

Orienteering race 1:58:14 [4]**** 6 km (19:42 / km) +300m 15:46 / km
shoes: Adidas Swoop
Very unhappy with run - or more like half hearted walk!
Errors early in course. Started to question every decision & very slow as constantly trying to check position.
Definitely a day to be written off!!
Cycling 55:43 [3]8.29 km (6:43 / km)
Drummond Hill. Long climb on fire roads!
Natural single track descent - something I am not used to but happy with the sections I completed.

Friday May 23

Cycling (Trails) 2:15:00 [3]
Glentress. Spent 1/2 hr at skills loop, then headed around mix of blue & red trails. New short red trail between Pie Run & Magic Mushroom - very smooth trail with skinnies. New sections of Blue descent open - joins with ascent so climbed again to finish down Falla Brae.

Thursday May 22

Wednesday May 21

Orienteering 39:39 [4]*** 3.6 km (11:01 / km) +300m 7:46 / km
18c shoes: Adidas Swoop
Very steep hills - need to do more hill running. Know area so could place where most controls were positioned.

Tuesday May 20

Climbing 3:00:00 [3]
shoes: Boreal Joker
1 warm up climb around boulder.
Grade 4, 5 & 6a+ (x1.5) top roping. 6a+ route tricky - minimal hand holds. Got 2/3 of the way up on colour 1st attempt & 1/2 way on 2nd attempt.
3x lead climbs - grade 3, 4 & 5+.
Bouldering to finish - 4 routes fairly successfully incl overhang then warm down.
C • what night? 3

Monday May 19

Horse riding (Hacking) 45:00 [0]
Good canter work on fields. Correct strike off's.

Sunday May 18

Event: Open 5

Cycling warm up/down 18:00 [3]3.25 km (5:32 / km) +90m 4:52 / km
Route from registration to start - nice long hill! But fairly steady climb.
Adventure Race race 4:33:44 [5]*** 41.26 km (6:38 / km) +1343m 5:42 / km
~3 hrs biking time & ~1.5 hrs running - might have been able to get another control on the run, but chose a shorter route as terrain had been very steep to that point.
Better team work & communication compared to Wan Dae last year. Andrew principally navigating but combined skills used effectively.
Cycling warm up/down 15:00 [3]3.5 km (4:17 / km)
Much steeper climb out of finish area (v hard work after race!), but a good blast downhill back to registration!

Saturday May 17

Running (Roads/Trails) 24:52 [2]4.3 km (5:47 / km)
shoes: Saucony Grid Nitrous

Wednesday May 14

Horse riding (Hacking) 1:00:00 [0]
Very sharp & quite strong but behaved pretty well. Canter work along tracks - obedient & fairly balanced. Only a little spooky.

Tuesday May 13

Climbing 2:40:00 [3]
shoes: Boreal Joker
Bouldering ~30 mins before & after top roping.
Managed couple of 6a+ routes. Mostly climbing 5+... finding these much easier now more confident with foot placement.

Monday May 12

Running hills 1:32:03 [4]11 km (8:22 / km) +670m 6:25 / km
shoes: Saucony Grid Nitrous
Pentland Skyline with ESOC - 9 Mile Burn to Flotterstone.

Hills hard work after weekend - walking most uphill sections. Recovering rapidly once at top & descending.

Sunday May 11

Event: SOL 2

Orienteering race 1:28:16 [4]**** 6.9 km (12:48 / km) +195m 11:13 / km
20c shoes: Adidas Swoop
First long course. Scale different (1:15,000 vs 1:10,000) & blaming this for some of my errors!!
Miss punched first control (oops!) - thought I had checked control number so didn't find out till finished. Meant rest of run wasn't spoiled be realising half way round!
Reduced intensity today as forced to slow down to navigate/blunder about as appropriate!

Running warm up/down 20:00 [2]2.5 km (8:00 / km) +130m 6:21 / km
shoes: Adidas Swoop
Far away start for W21L course.
Running late so rushing to get to start on time.

Horse riding (Schooling) 30:00 [1]
Decided to add work with Luna into the mix as well. Will let me keep track of what I am doing with her in amongst the other stuff I am doing.

Not ridden in arena for few months. Very fresh & lively horse tonight! Working forward into bridle well, tho rather strong in contact. Fairly obedient, round & responsive to aids, tho spooky at times. Worked on transitions mainly.
C • didn't think sitting on you... 3

Saturday May 10

Event: Scottish Sprint Championships

Orienteering race (Sprint) 28:10 [5]***** 3 km (9:23 / km) +155m 7:28 / km
shoes: Saucony Grid Nitrous
Made 2 huge errors towards end of course - first navigational error, second expected to find open gate but found it locked...... (1 mistake earlier too, but not catastrophic & easily corrected).
Irritating seeming to have someone else use me to navigate for about first 6 controls.
Felt dizzy x2 after finishing - BP probably low from stopping too quickly.

Cycling (Trails) 3:03:31 [5]35.53 km (5:10 / km) +615m 4:45 / km
Callander - Aberfoyle - Callander
Fire roads with steep climbs to Aberfoyle (~22K).
Rocky footpath on return.

Horse riding.

Thursday May 8

Cycling 42:09 [1]11.91 km (3:32 / km)
Must learn to ease off entirely when I plan an easy session.

Down set of steps - not steep incline.

Wednesday May 7

Orienteering (CATI) 57:04 [2]*** 5.2 km (10:58 / km) +100m 10:01 / km
spiked:16/20c shoes: Adidas Swoop
Score. Failed to notice that only open gateways on Barracks site were marked with crossing point symbol, so when planned route to my first control was blocked had to re-plan on the move. Lots of poor decisions resulting in poor course flow & poor map reading (esp 11). May help me concentrate more at weekend...
5.2K direct route between controls - ran MUCH further! ooops.
C • ? 3
Note
Off work sick - throat v painful & unable to swallow when woke up.
Horse riding.

Tuesday May 6

Climbing 2:30:00 [3]
shoes: Boreal Joker
Spent time bouldering to warm up - concentrating on using feet on features only & discussing bouldering lesson last week with others. Can still do overhang route we were shown with twisting torso technique to reach up. Still using arms too much. Need to concentrate on shifting weight & reciprocal pattern. More comfortable dropping/jumping down from height.
Top roping - managing 5+ climbs with ease again, esp when thinking about technique!
Finished with more bouldering but arms done & not managing well on technical sections.

Monday May 5

Note
(rest day)

Sunday May 4

Event: Great Edinburgh Run 10K

Running race (Roads) 51:03 [5]10 km (5:06 / km) +75m 4:55 / km vdot: 39.0
shoes: Saucony Grid Nitrous
Beat own time for last year's 10K by ~4'40".
Course slightly different - down The Mound instead of up.
Legs aching a bit on hills - blaming Trailquest yesterday!
Able to increase pace for last ~800m - esp downhill to finish!

10km - Splits

Saturday May 3

Event: Glentress Trailquest

Cycling race (Trailquest) 2:56:16 [5]*** 18.64 km (9:27 / km) +810m 7:46 / km
Off bike for periods over steep, loose or xc terrain. Took advice to take shortcuts through woodland! Approx climb.
2nd place in Solo Women's class.
