Mountain biking 30:00 [1] 1.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Warming up at Hemlock Hill, Ridgefield, CT. Did not ride one of the major trails, so it was fairly technical and somewhat wet when it was rideable, and often not rideable. So there was some hike-a-biking.

Orienteering 1:31:09 [2] 4.0 km (22:47 / km)
shoes: Falcon

Hemlock Hill Green course. The terrain is a good bit wetter than mapped. Mostly walking, occasionally jogging.

1. Straight. 2 To trail, around, then got a bit confused by the trail topology W of the control. When I made sense of it, I angled over the cliff nose, but missed low, then came up from the marsh edge. 3. Trails near the line to about halfway, then the vegetation got a lot greener than mapped and the trail got a little squirrely. Went on the trail to between 3 and 4, then over the index-contoured knoll into the reentrant. 4 Trail crossed the stream, then angled up to the E-shaped trail junction (nailed it), then in from a nearby boulder. 5. Tried to angle around the marsh, but instead found the area much greener than mapped, and hit the middle of the marsh, so I had to go a fair bit E to go around. Once in the solid ground I came over the knoll line, making a parallel error at the saddle underneath the purple circle (too soon). 6. Just right of the line, into the wide reentrant (quite marshy), then ran on the trail until it made sense (maybe 75m farther than necessary), then in from due S of the control. 7. Along the line near the stone walls, but lost exact contact as I went N. I relocated in a reentrant SW of the control facing a huge cliff. I went CCW around the cliff facing the marsh, along a tiny buffalo track left by other Green runners. (Thanks guys for confirming that the extremely steep path through the cliffs was not that stupid.) Eventually I found the flag a few meters away from the 4m cliff that's the control feature, not exactly at the foot. 8 Tried to go due W, but got a little N of W, hit the trail before it crossed the stream. Took the trail to a Y-intersection NE of the control, then attacked from the slight trail bend, over the top of the blobby knoll. Got a bit low and S until I turned around.
