orienteering race (Summer Series) 33:53 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel 2140

Bonython Park, after the rain. It was worth it just to see the Torrens weir overflowing, hopefully washing away the blue-green algae. Scatter O - so I was getting 15 out of 20, but do you think I could find the 20th control anywhere on the map? I had to stop and tick the controls on the map off one by one against the control card, before I finally found it lurking over by the Morphett St bridge. (I wasn't going there anyway.) It was a good course with the river and railway crossings giving lots of route choice, but was marred a bit by the dodgy mapping on the golf course.

A control shown as the end one in a row of 4 Moreton Bay figs was almost impossible to find because there were at least 10 huge fig trees on the ground in a sort of thicket. In the end I went up the hill to another control and then came back to this one from the reverse angle, where a single mapped fig tree made a good attack point, and then the control was hanging on the next one in line (unmapped). My guess is the mapper only saw the row of 4 figs on the west side of the copse of trees, while the course planner came from the east and didn't realise they had found an unmapped parallel row of figs. (Poor Helen, she felt like we were picking on her because she had put the control out, but it really wasn't her fault.)
