Orienteering race 24:01 [4] ** 3.25 km (7:24 / km) +1m 7:23 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: NB 1210 "Leadville"

Score-O at Caspersen Beach Park near Venice, FL. Helped out Gord Hunter with an event he put on as the Suncoast JROTC Champs. Interesting format he's come up with for the cadets: teams of three did a 15 control score-o by splitting up the controls among the team members; later the teams did a three-person relay with each member doing a 1.6km leg with 13 or 14 controls. Awards were based on total time for both events. Yellowish level controls but a good challenge for the kids (who had a pretty broad level of experience and skills). There were over 150 participating cadets who were quite well behaved and engaged. Strong adult support too. One of the JROTC groups was responsible for all of the non-technical aspects of event organization (registration, results, etc.).

I did the score-o as a one person team, separate from the JROTC competition. Overran the first control a bit on the 1:5000 map. Bad route choice to another control where it wasn't clear from the map that a boardwalk ended above the control (with an uncrossable railing). The area is a small park with beachfront along the Gulf but with an area away from the beach with a heavy trail network in a mix of rough open and assorted shades of green vegetation. Weather was spectacular - sunny and about 70F - hard to believe it's winter. :-)

Trail Run 9:13 [3] 1.35 km (6:50 / km) +1m 6:49 / km
shoes: NB 1210 "Leadville"

Cool down run after the score-o. Visited 6 or so controls in the opposite order.

Orienteering 15:15 [2] 1.46 km (10:29 / km)
shoes: NB 1210 "Leadville"

Checking existence of about 14 controls for the JROTC relay just before they ran. One control shown on the master map wasn't in the terrain. Turns out that it wasn't actually used on any of the courses. Always a confidence challenger when you have to verify that a missing flag is actually missing.
