City biking 35:00 [3] 6.2 mi (5:39 / mi) +10m 5:37 / mi

Left the house at 6am, headed for the pancake house in Wilmette on the North Shore. But flatted when barely into Evanston, with the dawn rosy gold in the east. Walked over to the Howard L station, and back home for repairs. Ended up replacing tube in front; patching the abrasion leak in the rear tire.

I went through my bike stuff and inventoried it all. After 48 years of city biking, I have plenty of supplies to last the rest of my life...and Sari's. I toyed with the idea of pulling the 700 clincher wheels, and replacing them with my tubular wheels. I have plenty of brand-new tubular tires from my triathlon days. And my experience with tubulars is that they ride better, and don't flat as often. For instance, you don't get 'snake-bite' or abrasion leaks in tubulars, since the tube is completely surrounded with the casing, carefully sewn together.

City biking 1:05:00 [3] 12.5 mi (5:12 / mi) +10m 5:11 / mi

Down to Rush University Hospital on South Side to pick up MRI disc and report for my trip up to Mayo Clinic next month for more diagnostic work. At midday, when traffic is light, sun is out, birds are singing. Very pleasant ride...through one of the US' major cities.

And BTW, a good New Yorker article about the differences in biking in the US and Holland is here.

White Hawk CC, Crown Point, IN. First time here. With Larry. Played with a South African guy who ran a hunting lodge over there. Quite the golfer; usually hitting the greens in regulation (which means reaching the green on a 400yd, par 4 hole in two strokes), while Larry and I lagged far behind, usually taking 4 or 5 strokes to get there.

Actually went 9.5 miles during play since course was so spread out through large houses of the rather up-scale suburb. But Larry drove the cart, and I usually got out with a couple of clubs and walked most holes. Decided the slope of 129 was a bit rich for us; we probably won't be back soon.

Springbrook GC, Naperville. New golf course on the rotation. Played the front nine by myself in buggy overcast humidity; played the Back with three others who invited me. The sun came out, the bugs went away but so did my game. Nevertheless, lots of good camaraderie and joking.
