Took off from the house this morning about 6:30. I am working from home on most Fridays during the summer. It has its pluses and minuses. A plus is, I get to sleep an extra 1/2 hour and I can run instead of spending that time driving to my office in Milford.

I had a plan to try 7 miles. It is 4.2 miles from my front door to the drinking fountain in the center of Joyce Park. Not an impossible run; I've done it many times before. But the first 1.2 miles are on the highway with loads of rush hour traffic and fumes.

I really wanted to get some distance in. I have been having a hard time getting out on a regular basis. So I need more mileage. But I did not feel physically ready to tackle 7 miles or so this morning. Nonetheless I coached myself into a trap.

Knowing that I could go out as if I would make 3.5 miles, but have the option to turn around earlier if I needed to, made it a doable plan. The trap was, I know me, and I will never turn around. Damn I am a bastard to run for.

It was pleasant enough. The temperature was cool. The traffic was not overly scary; at least not on the way out. The bike path had few users, but a heck of a lot of geese (and their droppings). I was making under 10 minutes per mile on the way out, but I slowed some on the return.

Crossing the bridge I stayed on the narrow berm (about 20 inches wide) on the south side instead of legally crossing over to the walkway on the north side. I wanted to cross but it was not convenient. Running on that narrow strip irritates the heck out of some of the mechanized bridge crossers. It’s rather harrowing to the runner as well. Of course I am more concerned with touching people off than getting hit.

In the end I managed the 7 miles. My longest run of the year. Thanks Dave Waller for challenging me. In fact I did it under 10 minutes/mile. So I am a happy Pat. What’s more, I have been dieting and training now for 3 weeks and I have dropped 12 pounds. Halle-Fricking-lujah. I feel like a new man; although a rather used one.
