Run 2:30:00 [3] 12.1 mi (12:24 / mi) +1907ft 10:47 / mi

4/10 waking up and starting this. Mentally not into it.

Easy from the house, down through the county campground and then out to the Hub trails. Had 15 planned, but really hot compared to what it was last week. Started struggling by 50 mins and then really coming apart around the hour mark. Up Red Hill road after Hard Sun to Webster trail head then back. Lots of walking on the way home.

HR sky high. Probably blown from the big week followed by a litter carry-out.

Monday May 30, 2016 #

Note

Feet/ lower legs are sore from the big week last week and then the litter carry-out. Giving it one more day to recover so I don't hurt myself.

Hiking 3:00:00 [3] 5.0 mi (36:00 / mi)

Mileage is a total guess....

So. Up to the tram at 1300 for map and compass training with "Ninja Carl". Some awesome info, triangulating positions, intentional offset, bearings, headings, etc. Stoked to learn from someone with his volume of experience.

Right in the middle of training, we get a call for an 8 year-old with altitude sickness at Round Valley who's getting worse. Jessee and Justin haul ass up with Jed and I right behind. Carl and Craig head out to set up the anchors for the belay.

Everyone gets there and the kid is mostly ok. Typical AMS symptoms, but he's better after O2 and some rest. Walk him around a bit and his symptoms come back. Jed makes the call to carry him out; he's maybe 50 pounds and the guys can use the practice. My first time on a litter so awesome practice for me. Carry out goes fine, we debrief and head down the tram car, guys are planning to head for beer and pizza.

Only we get a call on the radio from LVRS for 2 missing hikers that haven't come off the peak - it's 1830 with sunset around 1930. We're getting info at the valley station and 2 more people walk up and say their friends are missing; making it 4 missing. Everyone piles back on the next tram car up and a 911 call drops through RSO that there's a woman on Skyline that's separated from her group and lost off-trail. So 5 total missing. JEEZE.

Long story short (too late!), first missing group (19 and 23) were on the tram car down as we were riding back up and were located at the Valley Station.

Second group (two guys in their 50's, one legally blind), were located about 1 mile out from LVRS doing fine, just a little slow.

We were able to get through to the lost woman on Skyline on her cell, she could see windmills and the hospital so she was out of our park. We coordinated with CHP Air and the lost person by cell and radio and they were able to pick her up. We could see the lights from the helo on the pick up just as we were waiting for the tram car back down.

Kind of crazy watching a helicopter rescue at 4400 feet going on BELOW you.

Looooooooooong day.

Run 37:53 [3] 4.18 mi (9:04 / mi) +315ft 8:28 / mi

4/10 waking up, 5/10 starting this.

From the house, through the campground via perimeter trail and then out and back on Toll Gate. Added in 8 x 20 sec strides; recoveries were 20 sec walking an 20 sec jogging easy. Legs are TIRED from the week's load. Vacation the weekend of the 4th and 5th, Holly and I are going to try and summit Saturday from the house so might unload a bit before. Also planning on the 10k in town on the 11th as a fit test, so might hold off on the unload. *shrug* Getting that all in is going to be interesting...and fun!

Headed to the tram today for a navigation class with "Ninja Carl". Should be rad.

Run 1:09:23 [3] 7.7 mi (9:01 / mi) +803ft 8:12 / mi

4/10 waking up and starting. G got up at 5...ICK.

Easy from the house, down Perimeter Trail through the county park, out to the Hub Trails, then out and back on the single track. Mellow miles, walked 3 mins to start and then jogged steady the whole rest of the way. Bumped into Brendan on his way out for a ride.

Apparently, this weekend is "epic yard sale" weekend on the hill; just about every house is set up for a yard sale.

Summer season starts today. All my sites are booked, getting about 15 calls per hour from people asking if we have sites available. 99 days to go....

Run 40:26 [3] 4.53 mi (8:56 / mi) +375ft 8:17 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

4/10 waking up, 5/10 starting this. Kid still not sleeping well.

Easy from the house, down through the county campground and then out and back on Toll Gate. Glutes a little sore, but legs actually felt better after this. Nice that a run this distance has become no big deal. Barely 40 deg when I stepped out the door.

Walked 3 to start, 1 at the 20 min mark and the last :30 or so.

Tuesday May 24, 2016 #

Run 2:30:52 [3] 14.2 mi (10:37 / mi) +1891ft 9:26 / mi
shoes: Altra Lone Peak

4/10 waking up, 5/10 starting. Holly and G are back so I'm back to not sleeping.

Easy from the house, through the County Park out to the Hub Trails and back. Even a run of this distance is about 1/2 way to Hemet down Old Control. I'll have to get creative with my long runs pretty soon here.

Coffee and a scoop of peanut butter before, 1 bottle with a NUUN tab just for something to sip on. Hungry flat by just after the 2 hour mark. It's definitely time to start taking cals on runs beyond 2 hours.

Walked 3 to start, jogged 15, walked 2, then 18:2 for the rest.

Monday May 23, 2016 #

Run 30:38 [3] 3.43 mi (8:56 / mi) +307ft 8:14 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

6/10 waking up and starting this. Tough to get out of bed this AM for some reason.

Aerobic from the house, through the county park and then out and back on Toll Gate. Short on time since I slept in 15 minutes and this was all I had time for. Got something done, at least.

Saturday May 21, 2016 #

Run 36:51 [3] 4.14 mi (8:54 / mi) +332ft 8:16 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

Aerobic from the house, through the county park via perimeter trail and then out and back on Toll Gate. Form, cadence.

People in the campground boozing at 0900. JEEZE.

Run (Deer Springs) 1:14:36 [3] 6.39 mi (11:40 / mi) +1674ft 9:21 / mi
shoes: Altra Lone Peak

6/10 waking up, 7/10 starting

Holly down the hill for G's 18 month check up and because "I just can't" with the kid right now. Really?

Good news is I get sleep and REST while they're gone.

Late start to work this AM so plenty of time to go play in the mountains. From the house, up the hill to Deer Springs. Up past the Suicide Rock junction and a couple switches up until the 45 min mark. Jogged back down careful not to face plant or worse. Running up this trail is just hard, but one of those runs where I wanted to keep going. Probably ran the DH a tad too hard, but I need the stress to harden the legs up. Solid work here.

Run 36:21 [3] 4.15 mi (8:46 / mi) +371ft 8:05 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

5/10 waking up and starting.

Easy aerobic run...the usual. Added in 20 sec strides starting at 18 mins. Originally every min, then waited until the HR dropped out of tempo before starting the next. First 5 on the min, last 3 prob on the 2 mins. Progressing nicely, felt good.

Tuesday May 17, 2016 #

Run 2:02:29 [3] 12.1 mi (10:07 / mi) +1902ft 8:49 / mi
shoes: Altra Lone Peak

4/10 waking up, 5/10 starting this. Aerobic long run from the house through the county campgrounds and then out to the Hub Trails. Up Hard Sun to the fire road and then up toward Pine Cove before flipping it at the 6 mile mark.

Legs felt really good even after all the hiking/rucking with a rescue pack on. Secret sauce?

Walked 3 to start, then jogged 15, walked two, then 18:2. Mellow miles.

Monday May 16, 2016 #

Run 35:10 [3] 4.04 mi (8:42 / mi) +354ft 8:02 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

4/10 waking up, 5/10 starting.

Aerobic from the house, down through the county campground and then out and back on Toll Gate. Legs feel surprisingly good after the rescue two days ago. Started 20/40 sec strides at 18, but HR took too long to recover so left it out. Goal is to work strides in, be able to jog between and recover down to LTHR-20 in that 40 secs without walking.

Irony: Sat rescue cleared up at 1600 or so, another dropped at 2230 where the vic got lost at exactly the same trail junction. I might roll back there and fix the signs - ninja style.

Hiking (Rescue) 4:50:00 [3] 8.8 mi (32:57 / mi)

Lost hiker....

In bed at 2200 Friday night, tossed and turned until 2300, called out at 2350-ish *sigh* No one on the tram side available so: "In the absence of orders, attack"

Made the call to activate RMRU - not available until 0600. I checked the trailheads on the Idyllwild side in case he made it out; totally possible if you make a wrong turn where I think he did. No dice. Laid down at about 0300 and back up at 0415. Meh.

At the tram by 0600 for the 0615 employee car up and here comes the "A" team, Carl and Craig (former spec ops cold weather instructor and retired CHP, respectively); didn't get a call, just showed up early because that's how they roll. I LOVE IT.

Teams head out by 0700, Bill and I take a team back to IDY, Royce and I start up Devil's Slide by 1000. Hiker missing since 2030 at that point.

Call comes in about 1230 that mom got gps coordinates from the victim over text. Helo enroute, ground search called off. Dude is way over by Caramba Overlook and headed DOWN the canyon bushwhacking.

19 years old - young, dumb and full of....

Run 35:26 [3] 4.02 mi (8:49 / mi) +376ft 8:06 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

4/10 waking up, 5/10 starting this.

Whole family went down with the stomach flu this past week. HORRIBLE. Holly still has it, I'm better, but I've got a funky scratchy throat and post nasal drip. Allergies? Plants are going OFF up here. Plan is to jog easy to keep it out of my chest. It's not bad, maybe 3/10 intensity.

Easy from the house, through the county park and then out and back on Toll Gate. Legs feel good, stomach is good, weather is AMAZING and I'm ready to get on with cranking up the training volume to 11.

Thursday May 12, 2016 #

Note

Better, but I seem to have picked up a scratchy throat. Still really weak after not eating for a few days.

Monday May 9, 2016 #

Note

On the mend, but still feel like hammered dog shit.

Saturday May 7, 2016 #

Run 39:10 [3] 4.0 mi (9:48 / mi) +356ft 9:02 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

4/10 waking up and starting this.

Woke up in the middle of the night and had horrific stomach problems. I kept waiting for the vomiting, but it never came. Feels very similar to when I had food poisoning a few years ago. Talking to Holly at her Mom's house, it sounds like she and G have it too.

Felt a little better and thought I could go 4 easy miles, got it done, but HR in the stratosphere and no "oomph" to speak of. Drinking juice hoping I can rally and make it through the work day, but really just want to have a couch day.

Nauseated and stomach cramps, worse when I put anything in my stomach. Hate this feeling.

Friday May 6, 2016 #

Run 56:09 [3] 6.22 mi (9:02 / mi) +590ft 8:17 / mi
shoes: Altra Lone Peak

3/10 waking up, 4/10 starting this.

G decided to get up at 0500 today. Oy.
Aerobic from the house, through the County Park, down to the Hub trails and the start of the single track and back. COLD and breezy; about 44 to start and warmed up to a whopping 45 by the time I was done.

Walked 3 to warm up, jogged 10, walked 2, then 13:2.

Thursday May 5, 2016 #

Run 35:38 [3] 4.06 mi (8:47 / mi) +338ft 8:08 / mi
shoes: Hoka Rapa Nui

4/10 waking up and starting this.

Felt good and rested yesterday; G is getting his canines in and they're taking FOREVER. They come down a bit and then stop. Repeat. Bottom line, we didn't sleep more than 30 minutes at a time last night, then he got up at 5. Worked.

Easy through the park and then the usual out and back. Estate street is 2 miles, which makes it easy measuring out 4, the HUb Trailhead is 3, so 6 is also an easy measurement.

Weather on the way; colder temps and 0.5" of rain in town. Blecch. About 40-ish and breezy when I headed out this AM. Summer anyone?

Tuesday May 3, 2016 #

Run 1:38:39 [3] 10.1 mi (9:46 / mi) +1276ft 8:43 / mi
shoes: Altra Lone Peak

5/10 waking up, 6/10 starting.

Long run from the house, down to the Hub Trails and up Red Hill Road toward Pine Cove. Walked 3 to start and then 13:2 run:walk. Thought I had 8:30's in me based on the first 8k, but I don't have it yet. Much progress, though; I really think rucking is helping. Kind of surprising, really.

Hiking 2:45:00 [3] 6.4 mi (25:47 / mi) +1329ft 21:33 / mi

Foot Patrol from Long Valley Ranger Station to Wellman's Divide and back. Weather was great to start, but started getting super sketch by the time I was done: thunder getting progressivley louder, snow getting heavier. When the Ranger is hauling ass down the hill, that's what we call a CLUE.
