Swimming 40:47 [3] 1.14 mi (35:46 / mi)

4:09/8:28
1:34,35,35,35,35,35
3:36,32,26

Had to spend 5 minutes in the jacuzzi before the swim because it was full - thought that would slow me down, but it didn't seem to do so.

Golfing 10:00 [1]

49 - started 8-9 (included a 2-stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball - suspiciously an opponent switched balls in the rough after his next shot... he had hit before me.)

6 PM

Hashing 33:02 [1] 2.2 mi (15:00 / mi)

Made my first visit to the new-ish Syracuse group, and completed a relatively short trail with a nice cookout at the end.

Orienteering 2:15:35 [1] 4.09 mi (33:08 / mi) +212m 28:33 / mi

Picked up the Map Hike controls from Dryer Road Park. All were found, except #5. In the first pass, it was my second attempted control, but I never found a knoll. At the end, I went back and found a knoll in the right spot, but no sign of a control marker - I'm guessing it disappeared. That would not be bad - only one missing out of twenty.

Swimming 41:14 [3] 1.14 mi (36:10 / mi)

4:20/8:44
1:40,41,39,40,39,38
3:40ish x 3

Felt quite sluggish today, so coasted a bit.

Biking 3:17 [3] 1.0 mi (3:17 / mi)
ahr:118 max:136

Expresso Speedway. Beat my own Spring Leaderboard time (only one on the leaderboard for this course). (P=183, C=66)

Biking 3:10 [4] 1.02 mi (3:06 / mi)
ahr:134 max:151

Rolling Thunder. Top of the Spring leaderboard and only 10 seconds off the all time Y best. (P=222, C=71)

Biking 4:25 [5] 1.5 mi (2:57 / mi)
ahr:156 max:171

Redwood Dash - started out trying to beat my ghost, then saw the Spring leader was a little quicker, so went after that. That also turned out to be the all-time best and I got it by 4 seconds. (P=246, C=74)

Biking 14:13 [4] 4.42 mi (3:13 / mi)
ahr:140 max:153

Fruitdale, for the first time. Saw the Spring leader was out of reach (13:00), so just got it done. Only 5th all-time. (P=199, C=68)

Biking 7:36 [4] 2.36 mi (3:13 / mi)
ahr:142 max:154

Evening Bliss. Easy Spring leader, but only 3rd overall (behind 7:05 and 7:07). (P=209, C=65)

Biking 3:17 [3] 1.0 mi (3:17 / mi)
ahr:130 max:141

Expresso Speedway. Finished with the same time I started with. (P=180, C=72)

Orienteering 45:00 [1] 3.0 km (15:00 / km)

Set and picked up controls for a short course at Ellison Park during our project's team picnic. Only 3 of the 12 attendees chose not to participate.

Golfing 10:00 [1]

Not good - 52, I think. Hurt my hip on a couple of over-swings. And still inconsistent around the greens.

Tuesday May 21, 2013 #

9 PM

Swimming 47:30 [3] 1.31 mi (36:16 / mi)

4:15?/8:23 (guess the start didn't take, so I started the watch when I thought I got the 250 split)
1:34,39,38,31,37,37 (someone was racing me on the 4th one)
3:41,44,37
Also did 4 x 50 on 1:15 - first was about 48, but not many strokes (maybe 17 down, 18 back), the others were 43,44,43, but up to 20 strokes each length.

Note
(rest day)

Another unplanned day off. nate is in town and so we went out to dinner after track practice (and after I made sure that everyone was entered - but it turns out that I missed one - Alex in the 1600, and he would have been in, while it looks like he won't make the 3200).

Golfing 19:00 [1]

Golf tourney at Salmon Creek with JV and Scott (for most of the holes). We shot 70, which was not bad since JV had not played in 15 years.

Saturday May 18, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Another day of no training, since Zach had to be to Schroeder at 7:50 for the County Champs bus and Counties ended just in time for me to grab a huge slice in Hilton (their ad is no lie!) and get to Luke's baseball game in Greece.

The track meet went very well. Val opened things up with a 43 second win in the Steeplechase (3rd best time in the US this spring, only 6 seconds off of the top time), while Julia lowered her best to 8:03; for the boys, Jacob ran 10:48 again. Katie dropped to a 5:02 in the 1500. Natalie and Claire knocked 10 and 6 seconds off their 3K PRs (to 11:21 and 11:25); John, Zach, Alex and Ben all had PRs (or SB) in the 3200: 10:06, 10:20, 10:24, 10:31. Conor had a great finish for a 2:01 in the 800.

The 4x8s again struggled at the end of the meet - hard early events plus hanging out in the sun was not a good combination.

The baseball game wound up 24-3 after just 3 innings. Luke was the starting pitcher, but was pulled after retiring the first four batters (pulled during a perfect game?). He was 2-2 with 3 RBIs in the second inning and had another hit in the third.

Biking 42:39 intensity: (32:39 @2) + (10:00 @4) 9.78 mi (4:22 / mi) +56m 4:17 / mi

Was able to sneak in a short ride before I had to pick Luke up from 3 hours of baseball practice (two teams, back-to-back).

Thursday May 16, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Third straight day off, as we had JV Counties and I got home late 3rd night in a row. Will have to fit something in tomorrow...

Golfing 9:00 [1] ***
spiked:2/9c

Far too inconsistent tonight, back up to 50. Short game still needs much work. The heavy crosswind didn't help either.

Tuesday May 14, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Track meet against R-H, rescheduled from early April. Some kids on both teams sat out, others saw limited racing, due to Counties on Saturday, but there were some exciting races.

4:13/8:31
1:33,35,37,34,37,37
3:34,37,33

In the olden days, I would have thought a groin issue was causing soreness during breaststroke and backstroke, but now I know it is the hip being stealthy.

Orienteering 2:05:43 [2] 4.61 mi (27:16 / mi) +287m 22:51 / mi

US Champs Long - Green course

Pretty clean - biggest mistake was probably going to the go control.
C2 - too much downed junk and rocky stuff, so had to go around to the right, then went to the wrong boulder
C4 - zig-zag in the middle was to go around a marsh (advantage of not racing - can keep the shoes cleaner)
C5 - took path of least resistance over to trail
C9 - missed left, going to a much more visible boulder
C14 - drifted right, so had to go through crowd to the control.

Luke ran well, but just finished 4th (only 48 seconds out of 2nd). Then we had to hustle away so that he could make his baseball game (crushed by Tyler Holmes' team - team only managed 2 hits off of Tyler and their other pitcher).

Orienteering race 1:39:20 [2] 3.42 mi (29:02 / mi) +118m 26:13 / mi

US Champs - Red Middle.

Blew C1 badly, and then C4 as well - longer mistake, but more controlled.

Golfing 9:00 [1]
spiked:4/9c

Second night of the golf league and it went WAY better than last week. Despite opening with a double-bogey and three-putting for bogey three times, I managed to shoot a 42; 11 strokes better than last week.

The downside was that it took just about 3 hours to play nine holes, as we were stuck behind the slowest moving foursome in carts, ever.

Swimming 46:39 [3] 1.25 mi (37:19 / mi)
weight:171lbs

4:12 / 8:27
1:34,36,36,36,34,35 (on 1:55)
3:34,31,26 (I think they were that fast)

Tossed in 100 IM during w/dn, so first length of fly in several years.

Biking 37:16 [2] 8.25 mi (4:31 / mi)

Biked on the canal after dropping Luke off at his baseball game in Fairport. Made some effort at intervals, but not on specific times. Luke's team pulled out a 14-10 with 4 runs in the top of the 6th, after trailing 7-2 after 2. Luke was 1-3 (but one of his outs was a throw to first that it really appeared he beat). He also played well in center, including a catch in the bottom of the sixth (not the last out this time).

Biking 45:19 [2] 4.58 mi (9:54 / mi) +51m 9:34 / mi

A record slow bike ride on the Whiting Road trails during track practice. Since only seven kids managed to get out of bed and to the final Saturday practice, we relocated from Thomas to Whiting (the plan had been to run to Whiting anyway). I had to stop early on to clear a bunch of brush that had been placed across the trail in two spots in the south meadow - not sure why that was done, as there was no good alternative route for the 100 yards or so between the barriers. The Orange trail went OK, but the Red trail was tough with the narrow and curvy ups and downs. Groin (hips?) were sore during parts of this and it was very slow getting on and off the bike to walk a few hills and boardwalks.
1 PM

Swimming 46:30 [3] 1.25 mi (37:12 / mi)

4:09/8:22
1:35,38,37,36,35,34
3:39,37,35

Pretty decent effort, after Luke's baseball game (another win for the Cards, 8-3, with Luke 1-2 plus a walk, 2 runs and a nice running catch in center).

Biking 35:48 [2] 8.23 mi (4:21 / mi) +29m 4:18 / mi

Maiden voyage on Nate or Zach's mountain bike that's been gather dust (and spider webs, etc.) in the garage. Pumped up the tires and it was good to go (probably does need some additional maintenance for smoother shifting). It was good that I was able to get on and off this bike, since it does not really seem likely I can get on and off the road bike - not to mention the impossibility of getting my left shoe out of the clip.

I was limited in time by daylight, as this was after Luke's baseball game (coming from track practice, I missed the top of the first, and the game lasted less than 75 minutes with good pitching; a 4-2 win with Luke 2-3 with a run and had 3 catches in center - one was quite a nice play).
