Higher damper setting doesn't change intensity, it's effectively just the same as using a bigger gear on a bike. The energy needed to hit a certain pace is the same, but a higher resistance means you put more power down at a slower rate. http://www.concept2.co.uk/indoor-rowers/training/t... I would normally put damper setting on 5 when erging for fitness.

Hmm I put it on 7 today and found it pretty annoying with the chain flapping about but I guess that's poor technique..

Yeah that's almost certainly poor technique. Try taking longer on the 'recovery' (slide forward), should be about twice as long as the 'drive' part of the stroke.
