Can Dr. Hammer give me a definition of a "fen" as per wetlands? Examples?
Feel free to voluntell a grad student to do this instead.

Hammer:
Fen is a wetland that has accumulated over 40cm of organic matter and receives water from precip, groundwater and runoff from surrounding landscapes so has a cicumneutral pH.

And are the wetland most affected when the oil companies build roads through them - hence my new research sites in AB.

"cicumneutral"

I learn something new every day on AP. I may be the only one who didn't know this, but just in case:

"Term applied to water with a pH of 5.5 (acidic) to 7.4 (alkaline)."

what's this new research dr. h? sound like your doing work with Terry Osko (sp?). i think i'm being slowly groomed for some sort of wetland reclamation thing at the deathstar.

Meridian looks like you are gonna win Survivor again. I've lost three people in three weeks.

Oh and don't worry...I'm not working with Osko or anyone in the oil patch for that matter. But I'll be adding more sites in Alberta for the wildfire research.

My crew leave on Friday out west in our truck (aka the ditch bitch). I was driving it around town yesterday on Hamilton narrow street lanes. Scary big. But when we arrive in Slave Lake the truck instantly looks small compared to the average AB truck.

That should have read ciRcumneutral above.

Interestingly, I found a definition for the word spelled the way you had spelled it (which I also thought might be a typo). However, I'm now finding *way* more references to the word spelled this way!

Thanks Hammer, enjoy your trekking.
Are you passing through Edmonton on the way to Slave Lake?

That is so funny. Anytime I mention an O route choice going through a swamp or a marsh and Pippa is anywhere within earshot, I am bound to hear, "Actually that is a ... because it has blah blah pH..." because I always get it wrong. I have been instructed to call it a "wetland" as that covers everything (or maybe I have been tuning her out on that one, too). Somehow saying, "The control was in the NE corner of the wetland," sounds geeky even for an orienteer.

Good for Pippa!!!!
