Day at Gilwern south wales, sport climbing with Steve, about 7 pitches in glorious spring weather, up to 6b.

Great fun. Quite beaten up from last 3 days so rested on a couple - this is a fun / training day! :)

Life is so good right now.

Climbing (Trad) 45:00 [4]

Met Paul K at Suspension bridge buttress. Sunny - I felt beaten up . Too much! running & climbing.....

three routes, he led all the hard stuff, i followed & found some of it really hard. Need to recover more. I led a short pitch at the end. He was on E1 5b's. Ouch.

Fell asleep after dinner with lights on, before 9pm. Pooped!

Running (Turf) 32:43 [3] 6.44 km (5:05 / km) +86m 4:46 / km
shoes: Brooks Ravenna 11

Easy run 4 miles post-visit to tip, pre-rock climbing. Took it easy, got a few turfs, then phone died. Felt fine. No need to do "hard"/fast runs every time.

Climbing (Trad) 1:00:00 [3]

Trad climbing, avon gorge, with Scared Dave.

Tried the classic three star HVS/E1 that Sir Christian Bonington did in big boots & socks, with no gear, chalkbag, locking carabiners, camming devices, sticky rubber, etc , in 1955: https://wildbounds.com/blogs/culture-and-pioneers/...

Dave did indeed get very scared at exactly the point Sir Chris is at on the pic in link above. I eventually had to lower him off (he's 15 stone....); we did another route next door, abseiled back in, and I got to lead the top pitch of the famous climb......

nb. I last did this route in 2008 with Liz, and she was fine; I found it hard. Tho again, I led.

nnb. Massive car accident under us as we started - car wiped out proper, police, ambulance, etc. We found our predicament safe by comparison! No one killed.

Note
(rest day)

Pooped.
Had planned an easy recovery (turf?) jog, but really need a full rest. Short walk with Liz - discussing the fact that we're finding it so incredibly difficult to secure a house to rent in Scotland! Why?

Any Scots reading this, please pipe up. Needs to be within 30mins train ride / bus / drive to Haymarket. Thanks.....

Climbing (Trad) 1:00:00 [3]

Trad afternoon at Avon gorge, under the famous bridge, where it's all nice & steep. With young Robyn again, my super keener seconder.

Was knackered/sore/stiff, from yesterday. But as soon as i left the ground, ropes dangling below me, the music started.

Cruised two E1's, the second on a whim, & it was hard; but i was having a "low gravity / high friction" day.

One day orienteer, the next rock climber, the next road runner. I have no idea who I am sometimes. But life is good. Good to leave Bristol on a high. Literally.

Running (Time trial) 1:00:03 [5] 14.33 km (4:11 / km) +91m 4:04 / km
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

Planned tempo hour / 1/3 marathon, as final hard road run pre-Sheppardine Half marathon in 12 days' time.
Wore v old road racers (2013) with new spongy insoles in - OK, that wasn't great, they are now fully retired!

Pace fairly consistent, 5km in 21:03, 10km in 41:44, so second 5 km in 20:41. Equalled my 1 hour Vet50 "record" of 14:3km. (set during my 10m TT in 67:40 in October).

Ran on a few grass verges but they were bone dry & pretty un-lumpy. Focus on fast glute-driven "patter". Last time i ran this course, it was cold & raining;
I'd forgotten how the long drag up to Fishponds was a bit tiring. Final hill home was grim.

Climbing (Trad) 45:00 [3]

Steep trad climbing with a new chap & his 14 yo daughter on the serious & steep suspension bridge buttress, where we did a v hard HVS (the famous "Hell Gates" with it's cave & visitor book) - and then an E1 5b, with hard crux, I climbed below Olivia & watched her slipping off & hanging like a puppet on a string. interesting day.

I led the 2nd 5a pitch of HG, clean. not easy.
