It looks like I did not improve any with the last of five score-Os. Only one's best four races would count. This was the first summer that I failed to make the top ten.

I beat everyone to 18 but then missed 5 and then missed 25 and then went back for both of them. I came within 20 metres of 16 but couldn't see it for minutes. I came within 80 metres of 2 and went back thinking I'd gone too far. D'oh!

I could have run straighter to 17 but everything was on through 12 where I figured I had time for as many as three more controls on the east side of the map. I had saved 10 for the run home. I never found 11 even and time ran out before we were even back past 17.

It was too hot (34°) to include the dog in walking-the-dog so I replicated Boilermaker conditions from three different trail heads. Besides, the vegetation on the sites was too green for Ziggy.

Apparently, it's also too hot for night orienteering.

AGAIN THE PUBLISHED RESULTS DISCOUNTED ME A CONTROL FROM TUESDAY'S EVENT.

WIth each score-O event, I have scored less and run slower per kilometre. I wish there was a way to figure out if I am getting dummer and/or slower.

During past events on this map, I spiralled around the start getting all the close controls before running away. It was time to try leaving some close controls for the return trip. This strategy seemed confirmed by the queues at my first three controls so I just ran off to avoid any more frustrating line ups. However, the two controls before I finished gave me the most trouble. I suppose after racing an hour in 31 humidex, my brain gave out. I tried getting #3 and #2 while in the woods. Of course I would have done much better shooting off the trail. Doh!

Finding the ?correct? pit for #5 was a challenge. I incorrectly thought #21 would line up with the school building. The temptation to trespass after #19 was incredible. Control #16 would have been a much faster leg w/o a match in progress.

From #17 I did NOT plan to go for #18. I knew that part of the map was tough. Besides, I needed to head home by #6. However, I came out of the woods from #17 farther along the trail heading for #18 so what the heck. I thought I was being rewarded for trying when I got within 50m and latched on to Robbie. I never got #18, thus the nasty time penalty. This was a 55 minute event.

The young adults put together another night-O for training. THANK YOU!

Except for two giant screw-ups, it was a straightforward course for me with little trail running. Compared to last Thursday, this was a much better outing for me. Was it the cool 16° temperature or the doublecheeseburger meal in the car enroute?

Aside from two controls, I averaged slower than 14min/km so I still could not have finished the full 7km before our agreed upon 22h30 cutoff.

I messed up the approach to 9, trouble again with that section of map just south of Timm Drive. I picked up controls after the race and I think I see what I have been doing wrong the past three attempts. I left S short of the control and ended up in the green SE of control 9. Interestingly, I screwed up my last leg, somehow missed crossing the trail home in the dark and headed NE through that same patch of green.

This would make a very nice permanent course but there is no way I could train on it without flags.

I picked up controls 9 through 18 immeidately after my run, while I still knew where they were. So I thought.

In the race, I struggled terribly seeking 9 until Robbie and Erice flew by. I grabbed on to their lamps to undercut 10 and 11. Therefore, I didn't really use my map for 10 and couldn't find that stupid little control during pick up.

I couldn't find 10 from 9. I gave up. I couldn't find 10 from 11. I gave up. After 16, I took the fields all the way north and hugged the cliffs as I headed for Timm Drive back to the car and there it was.

So many issues on this one. At first glance, it looked like a simple trail-running exercise. I decided that I would just leave out whichever two were more difficult to find at north end of the map. I didn't even get up there. Sure I came back with seven minutes to spare but at tonight's pokey pace, I wouldn't have got even one extra control.

There seemed to be too much out & back (4 - 3 - 4 & 6 - 7- 6). Hopefully, other route choices will be posted. I cussed myself for the 1k run out to control 107 but I couldn't have used that time for two controls anywhere else. It could have been worse: I heard of runners who didn't even notice 107 hiding in the corner of their map.

I didn't like going from 102 to 101 as I couldn't keep up with the others who ran the trails. However, I did get there long before the others who were at 102 with me. Even so, they all flew by me going to 104 and/or 103.

Coming off 108, I spent SO much time seeking trails and ended up dropping off cliff SW of 108 and never used trails. In hindsight, I shouldn't have been messing with other racers and should have read the map. I knew that I could walk up and down the reentrant to 112 but followed newbies on trail run instead. I knew about the double cliff hidden under the map target for 113 but I didn't even check the map or control sheet regarding depression above that double cliff. Instead I wandered in the same train of newbies.

After 113, I just ran and ran and ran (or I tried). So many people buzzed right by me and I even got comments about my knee [sigh].

Note

Again the results show me with one less control than punched. I give up. I won't bother making another appeal.

orienteering race 1:14:51 [3] *** 5.03 km (14:53 / km)

After suffering with the humidity during control placement, I knew that I wouldn't be completing the course. This night, there was no way I could do 28 controls (7.57km) between 21h15 and 23h00.

However, I did not set out to skip the controls I missed. I could blame the fact that I was just prescribed my first pair of reading glasses last month (left in the car). But instead I'll blame my lamp bouncing off the map. From the get-go, I headed to control 2 as if it was the first one. Upon arrival, I decided that my race would begin with 2 (forget about 1!). In leg 5, I followed trails all the way to Robertson Road and back down in to porcupine land. I was joined by James for 5, 6 and 7. Attempting to lose James, I came out of woods on N/S concession, turned off my lamp, and ran and ran.

After I zipped off on to the trail heading for 9, I noticed there was an 8 (forget about 8!).

It was fun but SLOW navigating around swamp to 10. There seemed to be bobbing head lamps in all directions. I watched as so many racers come back off 10 heading for 11 and the cluster of controls back across the swamp. Since (Adrian and) I knew our course couldn't be cleared by 23h00, why go back through the swamp two more times (forget about 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18!)?

After a 39-second hop over 19, I dropped S to trail and turned off lamp to lose Adrian. This was a nice, long, familiar trail run that I could probably do with my eyes closed. However, by the time I opened my eyes, I had blown right by controls 20 and 21 that I had hung myself (forget about 20 and 21!).

When I got to 25, I briefly considered 28 and going straight to finish and all the glory. But then I decided to walk last three controls, hoping to be caught by speedsters and sprint home to the finish. Even walking, I couldn't find 27 (forget about 27!). It took me forever to find the final control hiding in the chest-high grass on the 40° slope. The speedsters didn't arrive until after I ran home. No sprint. No glory. Only Adrian.

Thanks to Jeff! Congrats to Eric!

I ran a really good 60 minute score-O. Unfortunately, the time limit was 50 minutes. Hey, with the handicap I still cleared the map.

Immediately seeing the map, I knew which two controls I would avoid. However, the other handicappers chose differently.

The first two controls were SLOW queues for punching. That was probably a good thing for me, to be slowed right down at the start. I followed the train through green to control 3 and should have made my own path. Leaving the train, I ran straight over the hill to 5. I took the streets past 6 so I could just peer over my shoulder for the silly pencil-O thing.

Approaching 15, two of us went E into the wrong field.

At 12 I realised there wasn't enough time to get them all but by going for two more controls my handicap made it four more controls. I really had no choice but to clear the map.

LONG running!

I went past 16 on the parkway and then backed up, on purpose. I messed up 17 and had to look for control descriptions...exhausted. Blew past 18 and I should have known better from my own course creations in the spring. For the control 20 pencil-O, I again just peered forward a block and turned early.

En route to the event, I had left time to seek three geocaches but found none.

I did the same crummy start going to the same stupid controls as last time I ran this map. Is it me or the map? In hind sight, I should have run down Timm Drive for the first three controls.

My strategy was decided for me, I couldn't find control 7 and therefore gave up on control 4. With my handicap of two, I would now have to visit the rest of the map. I followed Cherie for the next four controls. After control 8, the evening was a simple trail run.

A couple of us hesitated short of control 11. I recall doing the same thing on last race here. I went overland from 15 to 16 and spiked the control. It actually works sometimes. From 16, I knew the safest way to finish would be to visit the rest of the map and there was plenty of time to do so. However, the trail went through many large muddy puddles.

Approaching control 21, I slowed for the many patches of green both on the map and in terrain.

I was running so hard at the end, that coming out of the final control I headed down Haanel Road, away from the finish. That error resulted in penalty time.
