Strength 14:00 [0]

Basic core stuff. Dan joined me, made it through almost all of it, just didn't like bicycles!

Otherwise, a needed recovery day.

Orienteering race 2:02:02 intensity: (21 @0) + (3:33 @1) + (20:22 @2) + (24:49 @3) + (1:03:26 @4) + (9:31 @5) 7.86 mi (15:32 / mi) +635m 12:25 / mi
ahr:151 max:180 26c

Gosh, was I a tired pumpkin out there! Phil convinced me to keep with the 2h version, and probably glad I did, at least didn't injure myself or anything, although was a battle to try to orienteer well with some serious sluggishness in the legs and brain.

Did: 32, 33, 42, 57, 62, 81, 92, 52, 63, 82, 74, 93, 56, 71, 73, 84, 72, 54, 41, 83, 91, 61, 53, 44, 55, 45 = 26 controls

Ok to most, but way off to some, and really messed up 82. I would like to claim the map scale helped me mess up to that one, but I'm not sure that's accurate, feel like I should have been into the scale by then…

32- bit timid
57- didn't see little hill on edge of circle, paused to figure it out
81- whoops! too low, think I came through power line at low point, I should have realized that, I knew exactly where I was on the closer side of the powerline, was deceived by a reentrant
92- paused at first cliff, because there was a likely looking boulder and I didn't remember specifically if I'd already passed a cliff. sloppy.
63- didn't pick up the mini spur after the green hill, so followed the mini spur instead of the one I wanted behind.
82- worst!! this should have been so simple. out to trail, ran a bit along, then over big spur into reentrant, but I was way way lower than I thought and couldn't make things add up. guessed I was too low, went up a ways, but not quite far enough, went totally out to trail again. major grrrr. gave myself a talking too after this, about at least putting enough focus in to make this a worthwhile training.
56- off to the east. pushed by green?
91- rough stuff across that hillside!! at this point, I realized it was going to be tough just to get back to the finish in time with just the obvious ones along the way. motivation!
55- distracted by an unmapped boulder on way down. but it was still in steep stuff, I was looking for boulder in flat, should have ignored it.
45- checked a bit too high first, there was a smidgen of hill in the flat zone of that spur
and sprint, sprint in!!! gosh did I try to run fast, I knew I was going to be over (probably shouldn't have gone to 45), and was, 2:02 over, ouchie of 60 points off, wish I had those 2 seconds in the sprint in, but tired, tired legs!

Surebridge Training- Part of a Blue course

With Neil, Wojcek and Jeremy. We started each ~ 2 min apart, and were all vaguely around each other maybe 1-4? Really fun training, although chilly, and think I did alright with it.

1- didn't use trail, should have! a bit off coming off trail, didn't use the reentrant I intended
2- easy, up the reentrant
3- checked off lumps on the way down
4- didn't have a strong plan for this at all. went in the right direction, located self, then went on to the control, not pretty. think Neil's approach of low was probably best.
5- hehe, tiptoe on little hills across swamp, fun! although at the end, I wussed out and didn't feel like crossing the wee bit of remaining swamp. it was cold!!
6- words "Surebridge Mine" kinda got in the way, but ignored that bit and picked stuff up on other side- hill with cliff
7- also fun! winding way around cliffs, neat neat!
8- maybe I went too straight, could have worked with the cliffs better
9- longish leg. up reentrant, right side of swamps down backside
10- bah. obvious route apparently low along base of hill. I went kinda of diagonally over it on a bearing. must learn to consider route choices.
11- upperside of green, careful on way in because I didn't like yesterday's green
12- compass helped here, wanted to wander more east, but it kept me on track!

Lewis Morris Park- Red course from last week (with one extra?)

Started with Boris and Neil, which was fun, Boris came from low to 1, which was about equal, then we raced to 2, and they were way faster through the terrain. But then I was really unhappy with 3, I was running on a bearing, which just took me the wrong way from the top of the hill. I must have been a little off the whole way off. So I went and did 3 again, trying to be better about the bearing, and at least noting the reentrant at the bottom of the hill, although there really is very little up towards the top to help… maybe need to get used to more vague orienteering like this.
4- ignored trails, over hill top
5- ok, was a bit low, tiny rootstock!
6- fine, aimed off a bit to the close side of hill top so I definitely wouldn't overshoot it
7- gorgeous, gorgeous ridge run for the first bit. then more green, went over the hilltop
8- didn't have the end of this route planned before I got there, whoops, but was fine
10- not sure I came off trail where I intended, was a bit confused by the trails up there actually
11- bah, there is no wet ditch at all. and other things don't make sense. I poked around for awhile, hoping for something to make sense in the area. but it didn't.
12- almost went too high, it's really right before the hill starts
13- up and over.
14- fun fast running along stream bottom actually. bailed just right at the end when it started to look thick, then onto the trail.

Note

Knee still hurts after running. Mom says its probably an insertion tendonitis, which is more than reasonable. So I should stop running and ice and ibuprofen. Will try to cease running, say after Norwottock? At least til the next weekend? Will be easier to stop running if there weren't orienteering around to do!

XC skiing 46:00 intensity: (5:00 @1) + (21:00 @2) + (15:00 @3) + (5:00 @4)

Neighborhood skate rollerski with Steph, testing out the "go-go" boots that it looks like I'll adopt as a hand-me-down. Woo, new boots! They were a bit small for Steph and she only used them one season. Psyched!
2 PM

Orienteering 17:53 intensity: (1:58 @1) + (6:30 @2) + (2:14 @3) + (7:11 @4) 1.0 mi (17:53 / mi) +83m 14:13 / mi

So, brought the little sis with for afternoon training with Neil, Wojciech and Marta at Pole Brook!! I designed a trying-to-be-orange course for Stephi to try out and flagged the first 5 controls (in the trickiest bit of woods) on the way out to the start. Think Neil got her in tune with the map a bit more on the way out to the start, and then also had her think about routes while we were there for the first few. That was definitely helpful. Because while I had made the course to what I though were distinct features and/or handrails and/or using big catching features, that's not what Stephi saw, at least, without a nudge.

I found it hard once or twice to be sure of which was the mapped boulder while flagging.

WOC '93 short course

Meh, ok, but not wonderful. The rockiness of Harriman makes it harder to map-glance, I found. I did this training before last fall, but remembered little of it, so was still worthwhile to do again. Although the green little hill I was scared of last time, I was scared of again (4). Was off to 3, but figured that out at stream, I had been on the upper edge, near swamp, not the lower one I thought. 6 choose wrong lower green at first, realized when leaving control it was wrong and went back. 13 was fun, should have realized what side of the burm I was on earlier.

Stephi came back and hung out at the finish waiting for me (she rocked her course in 35 minutes!), we chatted jogging on the way back!

First time on classic rollerskis in ages! Woo! Body seems to remember the motion of striding, only fell splat once, and it was a drawn out-almost caught-myslef-going uphill fall. So no trauma.

Specific strength over at Red Hawk Hollow hill. It's really perfect for specific strength, no cars. Steep hill. Triceps, single stick, no poles, double pole.

Running 8:18 intensity: (4 @0) + (35 @1) + (3:20 @2) + (3:41 @3) + (38 @4) 0.93 mi (8:57 / mi) +9m 8:41 / mi

ahr:134 max:148

Felt like I've been neglecting drills this week, so went out and did some. If they are what's taming the hamstring injury down, do have to keep this up!

Strength 14:00 [0]

I was pretty tired, but Stephi suggested to do abs. So we did 10 min abs plus 2 min back, 2 min sides.

XC skiing 1:10:22 intensity: (6:29 @1) + (20:36 @2) + (19:25 @3) + (20:10 @4) + (3:42 @5) 12.04 mi (5:51 / mi) +263m 5:28 / mi
ahr:144 max:171

Super-d-duper windy out today, yikes! Poles blowing all around and one polypro almost not enough. Did double bump intervals x 4. The ones on the way out are longer and harder, more v1 necessary. Missed Alex again, she had to use all daylight for work, boo!

And it was apparently big smelly truck day today on River Rd. Or maybe my fault for being out slightly later than yesterday. It's funny that they think it's necessary to honk to signal their presence. Like I can't hear the rumble of the giant machine they are in from ages away...

Oh yeah, and 10 min dp on way back. And totally spaced on remembering to bring the new map holder to try to practice with it, whoops!

XC skiing 55:00 [3]

Just a ski, at River Rd. Surprisingly warm morning, 44 degrees when I started, foggy. Out and back, 15 min dp, 15 min no pole, 15 min with poles, 10 min dp. Felt fine.
