Orienteering Meet race 3:55:00 [4] *** 32.0 km (7:21 / km)
ahr:132 max:159 spiked:35/37c shoes: Solomon black

Chicago 4 hour City Urban event.
Not such a big turnout.
The controls were all questions that had to be given an answer with a double sided piece of regular paper.
Mine was getting trashed and I pondered the wrong question at a corner looking for some female judges name. After checking out some other corners blocks away I kept coming back to the same corner. Turned out since my answer sheet was messed up and that was the question for another checkpoint. The question at that corner needed was what time did the restaurant open? :-)
Only 3 half serious competitors seemed to be doing the 4 hour, but there no specific declaration to which you were doing. There were maybe 30 folks total for this pretty cool event.
I thought that I would just do 3 hours. At 2 1/2 hours my IT band was crying. I was way at the south part of the map. But continued to pick up controls at at a slower painful pace instead.
Overall I ran 20 miles on 99.5% pavement in under 4 hours. I think that's close to a 4.5 hour marathon. So I consider that done and answers the question if I could finish one. Not with my IT band, that has stopped me many years in my younger days, once in Chicago too where I thought I would break 2:50.

Control pickup was a breeze too.

trail bike ride 45:00 [3] 9.5 mi (4:44 / mi)

Rode to pick up vehicle from shop.
Had a manual tran problem that it was difficult to put to shift the gears and they would pop out in not completly engaged and somethings pop out of gear anyway. My shop fixed it perfectly for a reasonable price $500 and it shifts like new...sweet!

Orienteering Meet race 1:26:12 [5] *** 5.8 km (14:52 / km)
spiked:13/15c shoes: Icebug #4's

Night O at Veteran Acres.
A usual good place for a night O.
Nice temps, little bugs. Was doing well till I mistook a different trail for the one I wante. Didnt lose too much time but on # 6 I lost 15 minutes. I could not find the damn trail I was looking for off the power line. Finally after checking out numerous other trails I just went around and came in from the north. Fun night and after all controls picked up off to the bar for a late night beer and drive home.

Road Riding 1:25:00 [3] 18.0 mi (4:43 / mi)

Rode to the neighbors house to deliver some new ChicagO club shirts.

I have to admit that Siven had the most colorful O shirts of any others I had seen in Sweden and Scotland. Glad to have used them for the club shirts I ordered for our club members. Was a complaint about their stitching, which may or may not be true. But 3 weeks and the shirt held up well, so they might last in Chicago a bit.

Easy ride and not much hurts which is a good thing. Oh and it was sunny and warm!

spiked:14/17c shoes: Icebug #4's

Last day if Scottish 6 day.
This trip has been an orienteering junkies perfect trip.

The last day was pretty awesome terrain.
Not super fast, but steady and Rick caught up to me at 11 and the race was on. Should of ran him diwn but I was sloppy in the open 4 controls at the end.

3 weeks all controls found, never really messed up.
Body tired and sore in places. Can't wait to get home.

All maps posted on CAOC Facebook site. Enjoy!

Orienteering Meet race 1:29:47 [5] *** 5.7 km (15:45 / km) +240m 13:01 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: Icebug #4's

Day 5 Scottish 6 day.
This was the toughest terrain of the trip.
Started the race climbing out if a huge river and up up a hill through fallen trees that looked like an open area. Down and up again. At #4 I had it with this terrain and took the road trail option that got me out of the woods and based on splits was a great decision.
It was slow with bad footing and lots of heather and moss to slow you down.
Just happy to finish, turned out I had a decent time.
We had to walk 3k to the arena, 3 k to the start and 3 k back to the bus.
We did find a Jamaican restaurant in town.. :-)

spiked:12/15c shoes: Icebug #4's

Day 4 Scottish 6 day.
Wow this was fantastic terrain, lots of trail options and fast.
Did make a few bobbles, like what else is new.

Big problem was I drank 2 bottles of a energy drink that had caffeine. My hr was super high and had to slow myself down. No more caffeine unless I am having a sedentary day.

Still two days to go... Ya mon!

Orienteering Meet race 42:12 [5] *** 3.6 km (11:43 / km) +95m 10:21 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Icebug #4's

Day 3 Scotland, middle distance event and I felt physically at the start best of the trip. Then messed up #2 by a minute or so, began really good nav till the bingo control in the green. Bad compass bearing and lost 5 min on this control. Did not lose focus and finished hard in a great area of depressions and clearings. Lots of down logs and brush in the clearings that made travel slow, but no marshes to cross and this was the area used by the world champs from yesterday.
Gt ended up 19 seconds behind me.... Figures :-)

Orienteering Meet race 24:34 [5] *** 2.5 km (9:50 / km) +55m 8:51 / km
spiked:20/24c shoes: Solomon black

Rest day sprint in Forres Scotland.
Really made you concentrate at the first part and ended up climbing a big hill the last part in the woods.
It was run in town with cars , pedestrians all over the place.
I made 4 bad route choices. But was smart enough to see a control that had the purple line over a black uncrossable fence.
Real did not have the energy today possibly the loser kids camping next to us stayed up till three being noisy assholes.
Very fun sprint actually on an off day. Not too hard, but good enough to stay stretched out.

Orienteering Meet race 1:03:52 [5] *** 4.4 km (14:31 / km) +160m 12:17 / km
spiked:11/16c shoes: Icebug #4's

Day 2 Scottish 6 day.
Well this new area did not have traffic down and the bus was an hour delay on the one lane road leading to the event. Anyway with a late start me hundreds if others off I went towards this big climb into an area with little visibility. So luckily I hit one and with two it was hidden in the ferns. Three was a long leg up hills of heather. Close to being off the map, maybe I was way too much time was lost in this trickey control.
Lost too much energy and slogged through the rest of the course not making smart route decisions. Rick was 58 and the rest of the m-60 Americans between me and him.

Orienteering Meet race 1:01:18 [5] *** 6.0 km (10:13 / km) +240m 8:31 / km
spiked:21/22c shoes: Icebug #4's

Scotland 6 day event day 1

Somebody I knew started 1 min behind me and caught me at the first control and the battle was on. He still beat me in by 4 seconds, but was fun going head to head with him.
We each took different route choices and still ended up so close.
The map a decent amount of marshs and the flys were hovering during the run in the open areas.
We did not arrive and set up camp to very late 1:00 by Sweden time.
6000 entrants I heard.
This was Fun!
Walked into Inverness in the afternoon, cool places to eat including a Jamaican place I will have to try.

Orienteering Meet race 1:09:23 [5] *** 5.1 km (13:36 / km) +240m 11:01 / km
spiked:12/13c shoes: Icebug #4's

Last day WMOC. I ended up in C final.
Had a decent run and broke 70 minutes.
Felt way more comfortable with the terrain here and wish it would keep going. Still slow running through the clumpy marshes and mini cliffs that are some what steep.
Tried to take trails when I could.
Ankle/foot issue seems to get better bit by bit, not sure why, but I am not complaining.

On to merry old Scotland!
