There will be beer, Fer Fun'k Sake! Good thoughts on this. When I said goodbye to speed I said hello to mountains. It's a pretty darn good exchange. I think you've kind of done that; instead of road racing you're doing cyclocross. Are you comparing yourself to others, and not feeling fast in that way? I hope you can find the playfulness of it all. Maybe it's your turn to dress like a banana.
I'm comparing my current self to my past self. It's more apparent when I race bikes, because I have both a more accurate measure, and I was a faster cyclist than runner. For instance-- I used to be able to put a 2 minute gap on the whole field for the category I'm currently racing in. But now I'm mid-pack fodder in that same category. So I'm trying to figure out how to deal with that dissonance of what I remember and what I am.
