Orienteering race 1:46:24 [4] *** 14.45 km (7:22 / km) +193m 6:54 / km
23c

Canadian Champs long. Better than the middle - though I had help. I took the first couple controls well, particularly 2, and was feeling good about things, but had big big problems with 3, which allowed Graeme to catch up. We were then basically together until halfway to 17. I led into 3, 4, and 5, he took the lead on the way to 6, 7, 8, I was ahead to 9 and 10, he led from 11 on. We were lazy on 14 and didn't climb enough, but beyond that pretty much on point with our forces combined. Did my best to heft my share of the nav burden (since it's not my champs, after all) but Graeme often seemed to be a little springier than I, especially going uphill.

Then, disaster - I rolled my janky right ankle on the way to 15, and a second time near 16. After the second one, sharp pain with any foot wobble, so had to slow down and let Graeme get away. It was okay on trail, but I had to move very gingerly over any uneven forest ground. Was therefore surprised to see Graeme again at 21, the last forest control, and tucked in just behind him for the remainder.

Canadian Champs middle. A very poor run, though not quite as bad as it seems being that I started between 1:45 and 2:00 late (due to a confluence of factors involving bear spray, GPS watches, and clock times). Suffice to say I was quite discombobulated and didn't get a chance to think about actual orienteering till I was already 2min in the hole. Not that this is any excuse for sucking, but definitely not an ideal start to a race.

First control actually went okay, though it was relatively simple. Second control was not simple and I bobbled it mightily. Third was a short leg, then I blew up on both 4 and 5, and later on 10. Did have some decent-to-good stretches in between. Tricky, subtle terrain which requires full concentration at all times; I did not have the necessary concentration.

Made it down to Patrick's SGLRG Wednesday run. They were hosting some visiting British guy who is about to begin a 40-50 day journey running from Seattle to San Diego. Ho hum, that's cool I guess - but the weird part is that he apparently eats only fruit (is fruitarian a word?) and fuels himself for athletic activity largely on bananas and dates. For example, today he ate TWENTY-FIVE bananas. Or, he'll eat an entire watermelon in one sitting.

At the most recent Cascade board meeting and subsequent to it, we've been discussing the OUSA 50th anniversary fundraising drive and whether/how to contribute to it. I find myself conflicted on many of the current issues surrounding the national federation: the funding drive, the ED question, the OUSA general philosophy, etc, but what seems objectively clear is that the orienteering population is aging, and there is little or no reason to suppose this will somehow change on its own. Therefore, if on the whole we keep doing what we're doing, the sport is likely to die a slow death in this country. This appears more or less indisputable.

So - action is needed. I have no answers, but I can at least identify the problem - namely: not enough new orienteers are being created. Ergo, the singular aim of everyone who cares about growing (or even maintaining) orienteering in the US (and I guess this probably applies to Canada too, though I'm not as familiar with the situation there) should be to get as many in the 10-25 age range orienteering, as much as possible. Doesn't matter how, when, where, why, or what you call it. Get. Young people. Orienteering. All else is insignificant in comparison.

Obviously, none of this is an earthshaking revelation and any number of brilliant people across the country/continent are already doing great things to counteract the trend, but it seems that many others either do not see the problem or do not appreciate the urgency of the situation.

I guess this is where I would like to see OUSA take leadership - A. Raising awareness that, hey, yes this IS a major problem, B. Here's ideas on what we as a national body and you as clubs can/should do about it, C. Here's material aid for the various successful ongoing youth programs around the country (Barb, Erin, ARK, WIOL, ROTC in places like GA and TX, others?) and D. Coordinating and organizing the knowledge and experience of the aforementioned programs to fast-track creation of new youth programs such that we don't have to re-invent the whole thing every time.

Maybe these are not realistic with the resources OUSA has, I dunno. But if I was the big Czar-man this would be, like, the entire mission statement and we would pour whatever resources we do have into it. If nothing else, when (if) our ship still sinks at least we can say we went down fighting the right battle.

Everett Street Scramble. A longer course than usual; Street Scrambles are generally clearable in under 30mi, but this one had two or three circuitous out-and-backs which pushed the distance up. I came close to clearing it, only missing three 10pt checkpoints near the start due to running out of time. Also took a -20pt penalty for finishing 90s late, for a total of 950/1000. On the plus side, my average speed was 1-2mph higher than usual.

Had one 1-2min nav error where I misread which street connected to the bridge I wanted to cross, and one 2-3min route choice error where I was unsure from the map whether an elevated road allowed access to the spot I wanted to get to - turned out it did, but I had taken a safer/slower route.

Rolled out to Cle Elum for the day with Don, Murray, Peteris, and Ott. First order of business (for me) was to test-run one of the courses for Forest Runs' Jungle Creek two-day event. All I'm at liberty to say is that it will be fun orienteering on new maps and everyone should come! Weather will in all likelihood be excellent and it is <2 hrs from Seattle.

Then spent the afternoon doing some fieldchecking on the second day's map, as well as initial exploration/evaluation of some uncharted territory for potential future mappage.

My personal convictions certainly do not lead me to the Republican Party, but at least I could respect their right to their honestly held beliefs. Now that they have officially repudiated their own principles by nominating a thuggish, ignorant egomaniac for the Presidency, it will be a long time (if ever) until I can forgive them the real and potential horror they have wrought upon our country.

"And we should fear - for the republic, for a democracy facing its gravest peril since the Civil War."

Blanket control setting/pickup, including some O-terval-y things. An unofficial count of 74 starts tonight, which essentially matches the highest ever for a Wednesday Evening event. With their strong home-field advantage, the Olsons dominate Big Finn Hill - last year Jordan won and Jon was second, this year Jon won and was the only runner to best the 40min estimated winning time.

I enjoy setting at BFH, as it is both big and interesting enough (relative to other WES venues) to create something approximating a real orienteering course, and also allows for some variation in navigational challenge. However, I wish I had not procrastinated this time and thus been unaware of some minor yet important map updates which would have improved the experience for people.

Choose Your Adventure @ Fort Casey SP. A bunch of people went the same way out of the start; I led the pack around the first loop and into the map exchange with Bonesaw 5s behind and Jonesaw not too much farther back, after which we all went separate ways for the second loop. I made one ~20s mistake when I got diverted by a bonus trail in the vicinity of 117, and Bonesaw ended up clipping me by 21s. No clear consensus on what the best second-map route was.

Gorgeous day to be outside!

Set off journeying to Whidbey Island to attend the wedding festivities of Cascade members Run Bosco + partner, but upon nearing the ferry dock realized I had badly misjudged the wait time; the line was over a mile long and I would never make the 4pm ceremony on the other side.

So, I ditched my car, grabbed mr. bike out the back and made a desperate dash for the 3pm ferry in full suit and tie. Met fellow attendee Mike Schuh there - he had also abandoned vehicle to board on foot.

Next problem: get to the venue from ferry dock. Google said 5.3 miles with 500' climb. With est. time of ferry arrival 325pm, it was always going to be a bit dicey. I estimated I'd show up very sweaty and hardly presentable but would make it with 5-10min to spare; meanwhile, Mike was exploring some sort of sketchy bus and/or hitchhiking option.

Then, salvation! I ran into Eileen and Ryan Breseman (also wedding-bound) on the boat; they had space in their car not only for myself and Mike, but also my bike! Hooray Subaru!

Oh, and the wedding was lovely :D

Pig War @ Sumas Mountain. Not really into orienteering today, physically or mentally - enjoyed the first few controls in the detailed area near the start but once the course went up into the steeper reaches I started losing interest. By 12 or 13 was pretty much over it and wanting to be done, so started losing focus and thinking about random stuff, which never turns out well and caused me to lose a lot of time, particularly on 19. After that I no longer cared at all and was basically just jogging, but tried to make myself at least practice some good mental/map-reading habits on the last few controls.

So yeah, just a major off-day. Also, I seem to have been spoiled by recent East Coast, EWa, and Laramie O-ing and forgotten what a down-home PNW forest is like; I suffered all downed logs and patches of thick green as personal slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

Running 34:24 [4] 10.0 km (3:26 / km)

Saw that they had a 10k at the Lakewood Summerfest where CascadeOC is having an event today, so I signed up on a whim. This is a dubious result, as I don't think I'm physically capable of running a sub-35 10k on a track, much less on trails, with some climbs, turns, etc. It seems likely that something is wonky - simplest explanation being their course was short. Unfortunately I forgot my watch so have no way to cross-check.

I ended up winning the race though, so that's cool. A group of four were in the lead out of the start; one guy tried to go out faster than the other three of us but died 1.5 miles in. Another guy started to drop just before the halfway point, so it was me and a teenage kid starting the second loop together, but then he disappeared heading up the hill just after that, so I was alone for 95% of the second loop. One positive thing - just after passing through I asked the kid what our time was and he said 17:20 - meaning that regardless of distance my second loop was about equal to the first.

RMOF, Day 3. This was a weird run in that I felt really good about my nav - good planning, flow, visualization, etc. - and had no trouble finding controls, yet still lost 4-5min due to two unfortunate route choice decisions and one silly mistake.

First (most disastrous) decision - Leg 2-3 here. How would you do that leg? I outsmarted myself and instead of going straight I elected to head to the right around the big hill (notice monster loop in GPS track). Clearly didn't analyze this fully; if I had would have realized that it only saved two contours and added a ton of distance. Executed it terribly to boot and ended up traveling even more distance than was necessary for the route (though I realized none of this at the time - which was lucky for the rest of my race's sake). +2:21 to Eric on the leg, so at least 2min time loss.

Second decision - Leg 15-16 here. They had warned us at the start that the water was very high in the big E/W marsh just south of 15, so I headed back W to find a better crossing point. Came through okay and popped out into the open as planned, but then crossed the smaller N/S thicket/marsh way too early, because I happened to see an easy way through, and found myself having to side-hill across a bunch of rocky, slashy crap to reach the control. Could have saved >1min merely by running 100m farther S in the open along the W side of the marsh, then crossing and shooting directly up the (non-rocky) reentrant for a foolproof AP.

Silly mistake - Leg 16-17 here. Obvious route is the long, gradual reentrant that leads just left of the line almost all the way to 17. Note also the very similar long, gradual reentrant just right of the line - at a quick glance to the map about halfway through the leg I mistook the right for the left and apparated myself over there, which led me to erroneously correct left (again, notice big tumor in GPS track) and since I had always been left (according to plan) I naturally ended up well left of the line on the hilltop with a very picturesque view of the big lake. +1:29 to Eric here, so likely >1min lost.

Nonetheless, felt pretty positive about this race, as I had a lot of really solid legs (1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 15, 18, 19) and did many more good things than bad things. For example, won the splits battle against Bonesaw 11-9, which doesn't happen all that often. At 3, I was 1:40 behind Eric and 2:21 behind Nick, then at 15 was 1:32 behind Eric and 3:05 behind Nick, so was holding my own other than the three miscues, in terrain that was more rugged and technical than yesterday.

Happy America, everyone!

Only a couple small errors - hooked 5 and 18 somewhat for 10-15s each, lost a little bit of contact in the circle at 10 for at most 20s. Also felt stronger than yesterday. In first place through 9 and second through 17, just 20s back, but couldn't hold and finished 57s from Bonesaw and 50s from Barrable. The Killer B's. Rocky Mountain O' Fest, Day 1! Not such a good result; finished ages behind Nick Barrable and the Bonesaw. About 4min of errors:

1min @ 2 - mixed up my rocks and overran it.
1min @ 6 - lazy with the compass leaving 5, allowed myself to drift too low and left of the line.
2min @ 10 - purel time loss here, as I elected to go left and low around a big rocky hill. Turned out the ravine was pretty slow going and high and right out of 9 was both shorter and faster.

Felt good early on but the elevation began getting to me after 40-45 minutes, and I lost the ability to move well through the sage and up hills, even slight gradients. Probably a bit fatigued and short on sleep due to the previous night's travels.

Orienteering in the Medicine Bow is just so much fun. I have been here once or twice, but not for over a decade. One of my fondest O' memories comes from a Laramie Daze of unknown vintage, likely in the 2002-2004 range. There was a four-person relay and we formed a family team - my dad, my two younger sisters, and myself. I was the anchor, and as things progressed it became apparent that everyone was doing great. I was super excited to run and did something like 47min over ~7km, which was my best race ever to that point and the fastest per-k I had ever orienteered. In fact, up till then I had always assumed that only superhumans like Eric could possibly go faster than 9-10min/k. Anyway, we ended up something like 10 or 11th out of 30-some teams, and had a ton of fun cheering each other on and whatnot. I've searched for results of the event online once or twice, but without success. Could be all a dream...
