Note
(injured)

Still injured. Walking across the road last night I found myself thinking a quick jog to the other side was advisable. Nearly fell over with the pain.

Note
(injured)

Irritatingly slow progress on this injury. Can't manage a single running step. Injury log says it took 11 days last time (other leg) and that it wasn't gone when I initially thought it was. So another week, Great preparation for Aus Champs carnival.

Wash up from Feathertop was a strained groin after a snow hole collapsed under one the snow shoes. Add a heel blister as well. Managed to dance with the Macedonians tonight at a wedding. Exacerbated both conditions.

Walking 7:00:00 [2] 22.0 km (19:05 / km) +1360m 14:35 / km

Mt Feathertop, mostly on snow shoes. Not a breathe of wind all the way up or down. Still on the summit and only limited cloud cover. Octa 2 or 3 I am guessing. The long wait for a good weather day proved worthwhile. Blisters developed two hours in, but removing the PF heel insert solved that. Of course, sore heels by the end of the walk. Interesting mix of people up there. Skiers, obviously. Although a solo walk, it wasn't lonely. A couple of walking parties, and an aspiring climbing party. Found myself in the unexpected position of providing beta on the rib adjacent to Avalanche Gully. Climbed it with axe, ropes and other gear in the 1970s. It was pretty tame I thought, but then when well iced people have fallen down there and not survived.

Tarilta Creek (aka Mt Franklin Gorge). 5.3 SL
Lovely open terrain. Surprisingly enjoyable weather as long as you kept running. Paid for the longer course yesterday. Was really really slow for the first few controls. Body thought Saturday's course was enough. Tried the straight line technique again. No mistakes, but probably less optimal than yesterday. Julie took the wide option on a couple of legs and won each of them. In the end I was 10 minutes ahead of her, but she lost nine minutes on two legs with mistakes. Hoping one day she gets past the mistakes. Then I will have my work cut out.

Pilchers Bridge Central (Once Lyell Sth). 7.6k SL.
Did the longest course for the weekly long run. Wasn't expecting to get to the Sunday SS event. Tried to stay on the red line the whole way. Only one minor error on control 9. Where I had drifted to the left a little. Accurate red lining significantly reduces the difficulty of relocating.

Real Orienteering race (Black Jack Gully) 36:16 [3] 4.39 km (8:16 / km) +50m 7:49 / km
shoes: Salamon Speedcross 4 blue No 2

How often do you run on an orienteering course set by a nonagenarian? This Saturday event was a course set by Ian Johnson as a celebration of his 90th birthday. Each year for the past decade or more Ian has set the Saturday courses to mark his birthday. These courses have usually been set on the Black Jack Gully map that Ian field-worked in his late 70s. This year the marking of his 90th was seen as a milestone. Ian set the courses well in advance, but for the first time, was unable to place the control stands himself. John Wilkinson and Colin Walker stepped in to make sure the event took place. For the past month or so Ian has been living in Melbourne with relatives whilst overcoming some health problems. Despite these difficulties, he made the journey back from Melbourne to attend the event. Club President Andrew Wallace and immediate past OV president Mark Hennessy shared some memories of Ian’s recent and past contributions to the sport of orienteering. Mark reminded us all of Ian’s contribution to the development of Victoria’s first specialized orienteering maps. Orienteer and professional cakeologist Leisha Maggs produced a wonderful birthday cake and even the weather held off its rain until after the conclusion of celebrations. The day was a memorable celebration for Ian and the Bendigo Orienteers.

Oh, and the course. Back and forwards back and forwards. I fouind myself lookning at the terrain and thinking I should spend some time making a proper map out of this.

This is what counts for a long run these days. Dragging the chain behind Julie for most of the run. Put in a hard spurt to catch up towards the end and just managed, leaving myself breathless.

Lyell Forest.
Red line orienteering. No dramas. No speed. Julie was 2 minutes behind because she made 3-4 minutes of errors. There is a warning in there.
