So… This is it…. No more tomorrows! The Big Dance. The Ultimate. The Granny. The SuperCoach Grand Final weekend!
There are lots of names that it has, but at the end of the day, this is the one that you want to win (assuming you made it)! All of the scrambling that I have done throughout the year leaves me at this point. Luckily I have a couple of trades still squirrelled away and even a bit of cash in the bank.

I have an interest in the Grand Final of 5 leagues this weekend. Mason and Torren are the official coaches of some of these, but I'm claiming the "Mark Thompson" senior assistant role. Come Sunday night, I hope to be holding at least a couple of virtual trophies aloft!

Even with a clean run I am way behind the leaders in Catching Features. How do they do it?

One day I'll learn how to be good at this game, but for now I'll just be content with finding all of the controls and finishing near the tail of the field.

So far, so good. I had no pain last night after experiencing soreness at about 5am every night for the past 5 weeks.

Here are some arthroscope pictures of my right medial meniscus tears.
The first 3 show the tears. The bottom right is the smoothed repair.

Surgery today
Right knee arthroscopy with Mr Andrew McQueen at The Avenue Private Hospital in Windsor.

A 6:30am check in made for an early start to the day, but at least everything was very efficient at this time of the day - from traffic on the road to wait items for the administration items at hospital.
I was first up in theatre at 8am and put under a general anaesthetic. The worst part was the huge needle to put my drip in. I was glad when I fell asleep as my arm was really painful.

Anne said that I woke around 9am and started mumbling to her, but I don't recall anything until about 9:20am. I hope that I didn't promise her anything during that time!

The surgeon explained that I had good reason to complain about knee pain. There were a couple of tears to the medial meniscus that are now smoothed out. He said that I should be happy with the outcome and back into jogging after a couple of weeks. He suggested that for my longetivity in orienteering that I probably should avoid long distance training on hard surfaces. So maybe marathons are not the best for me, and I should stick to orienteering.

The surgeon also had a look at my fractured patella from 1997. The good news is that it looks smooth and is not likely to cause ongoing problems.

I was able to walk out with no pain, but my knee will probably be sore tonight after the anaesthetic wears off. Dr Peter Larkins recommends crutches for support over the first few days for knee arthroscopes.

Structurally, everything is sound. My knee will just take a few days to settle after having a couple of incisions and instruments poking around in there.
After 7 days I can try some cycling and see how it feels. Until then I've got some exercises to keep the muscles around my knee moving.

Long ride on my mountain bike - my last major exercise for a week or two.
Up Darebin Creek, along the Ring Road, and back down Merri creek, including a detour to the extravagant footbridge over the Hume Freeway bypass.

In to surgery tomorrow for an arthroscopy to repair my torn medial meniscus in my right knee. I'll be out of competition for 4-6 weeks but hopefully the knee pain will be gone.

In other news, I made the SuperCoach grand final in 6 leagues this year (4 as assistant coach for Mason and 1 as assistant coach for Torren). Torren won his Preliminary final 2369 to 2368 - equivalent to one hit-out! He plays Mason in the grand final next week. I can see tears coming from one of them :-)

In Adelaide today for my Grandmother's funeral. She was 95. A nice private family ceremony in Norwood.

The good news is that my arthroscopy is booked for Monday 6:30am at The Avenue Private Hospital.

Referral to knee surgeon for a likely arthoscopy. Luckily I can get in to see him tomorrow morning.

MRI - vertical and radial tear of the medial meniscus body measuring 0.3 x 1.2 cm.
The doctor was a bit concerned by some missing cartilage on my patella, but was happier when I explained that this was likely due to my patella fracture in 1997, and I have been running on it for 15 years with no issues.

Shadowing Sophie on the 3rd leg of the Arthur team at the relays.
It was quite challenging for a novice course, with many decisions required and numerous extra controls.
I think that all of the M/W10s that finished the course did a fantastic job.

I happened to find Jasmine riding in on the same road as me from her new place in Northcote.
She made some comment about my bike that I didn't quite catch - probably that my mountain bike looks a bit out of place on the road. I guess I could get a faster commuter bike, but at least the mountain bike gives me a decent workout.
We had a nice chat riding along, but I had to wait for her a bit going up Napier St.

Initial diagnosis from Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre: possible medial meniscus tear
Referral for an MRI on Monday at Victoria House Medical Imaging (where I will probably bump into a few footballers).
Follow up with Dr David Velten on Tuesday to review.
Likely outcome may be keyhole surgery to repair the damaged meniscus and out of competittion for 4-6 weeks.

14.5km was going to be too much for my knee and may set me back further, so I had to make the tough decision to sit and watch.
I think I need to stay off running now to give myself a chance of getting to the state and national champs in September. It's going to be tough to keep some fitness, but I don't have much choice now.

My dream of a sub 2:50 marathon is pretty much gone now, so perhaps another year.

Loop 3

It was great to be part of the first ever NOL night race.
My knee was very stiff in the morning, but after some swimming it was good enough to run slowly. On the first lap I couldn't keep with the leaders with some soreness. By the second loop it had warmed up nicely. On the third I tried to go faster to catch Dave Meyer, but it got sore again and I couldn't race hard to the end.
I had a good battle with Jimbo over the whole course, but he got me when it counted. Good job Jim!

Happy with 6th place given my injury.

NOL Sprint Darwin

My knee wasn't great in the warm up, but by the time I made it to the start line it was good enough to run at a solid pace. It would probably not stand up to full sprint speed though.
At this pace I nailed all of the controls in the campus, and was just 2 seconds behind 3rd. On the way to 16 I tried to increase my speed for the easy legs, but I jarred my knee. I had to hobble through the last 1500m, and it hurt through the soft sand dunes. Luckily I was able to hang on to 4th, but I lost significant time in running speed.

It's a pity about Michael Diamond overnight in the trap shooting medal round. He made Adam Scott's last 4 holes at the British Open look good. Diamond shot 125/125 in qualifying, and then went on to shoot only 20/25 in the final and lose by one target.

I wanted to try to run at orienteering race speed to see what may be possible this weekend. I managed to get through the session, but I was restricted in the first part of each rep as my knee didn't like stopping.

I now plan to rest for the next couple of days to give myself the best chance of starting on Friday. I should be able to run, but the question will be how hard I can push myself without too much pain.

Fitness test for Darwin.
After another few days rest my knee was about 80%. It is much stronger and I could run at a solid pace with little discomfort.
It is still a little sore when jumping over logs or having to lift my right leg high. It's not ideal, but it should be good enough to get on the plane to Darwin on Thursday.

The course was ok. The mapped vegetation was only a rough guide for what to expect in the terrain. I tried to find the fast running sections on the ground which didn't always take me through the corresponding mapped areas. I lost a couple of minutes on 12, but otherwise it was ok.
