Course: Relay 4.2 km 140 m http://www.gregjflynn.byethost17.com/maps/show_map...

Took off with the rest of the headless chickens into the green, should have gone around the lakes to 1, achilles started hurting right away, 2-3 just following the pack, and throwing in a bit of abuse where I could. Got the right split for 4, got stuck in the green ditch on way to 5, 6 ok just following the Phil Wood Locomotive. Now 7, got close to where I thought it should be and all of a sudden there were people everywhere looking for, stopped then turned right thinking it should be in a re-entrant, then came back not knowing what the hell to do and headed for the open, came across it, in a big flat open area, looking at my gps, it was about where the edge of the circle is, and I never saw any contour detail, did anyone else? 8 ok, 9 really struggled physically and achillally up the hill, was with Jager into it and 10, I then went around, got to 11 at the same time as him again, just followed the slow progression through the rest of the controls, pussyfooted down the hill out of the last and tried saving a bit for the end of the finish sprint to get past Middleditch and Aiden, but Jager showed a good turn of speed and smashed me, was well fucked at the end

Note

Had a massage after the race. She confirmed that my achilles was inflamed and something was definitely not right down there.

Had Jamie 3 mins in front, was laughing when I saw him before control 1 with his hands in the air, couldn't understand what he was saying, then when I got to where the control should have been it made sense "See mumble mumble if you mumble can find mumble it" went for a bit of a search before hearing Jamie yell out, "Found it, put it where it should be" Went back and punched and chased after Jamie, caught him at 2, and he asked "Did I put it in the right spot?" Confirmed he did then watched him slowing pull away through to 4, Then could hear the Carsten Express coming up the valley, it went flying past me on the downhill to 5 like he was in a 200m race. Pretty much struggled physically from there, walked most of the hills, the oing wasn't hard or exciting and only mistake I almost made was going into 22 when I think I was probably bored. Right achilles started hurting after that as well, stopped up the hill to 24 for a little bit of a stretch but could feel it getting worse and worse towards then end.

Lack of training really showed, couldn't bluff myself around this one.

Orienteered much better, was reading the map well, but was taking it easy to do so (since I've been struggling with that for a while) hurt like hell going to 1, got stuck on the cliff going to 2 then misplaced myself on the map and ended up doing a bit of a hook into the control, and didn't quite get the contours right going to 3. Would have been better staying lower going to 4 as sidling was a bitch, 5 and 6 were good, stopped before seeing 7, 8 thought control would be higher, pussyfooted down to 9, almost confused myself going to 10 but worked it out, 11-14 good, 15 lost my line after getting up the cliffs and went to the biggest knoll I could see which was the 1 north east so lost 30-45 odd sec there, then bit frustrated by that going to 16, wasn't concentration on line properly and looks like drifted right, and reading the wrong stumps (thought the control was on the wrong rock pile after the race, but looking at gps track makes sense) tried to relocate but couldn't make sense of anything (due to wrong stumps.. ) saw the control after starting to bail to the track and turning around when I could see it. 17 ok, 18 dont know why I thought not to take the track as basically ended up on it anyway, then go stuck in a dead/fallen tree right before the control. 19 All the way around, 20-21 easy, 22 dont know why I took off in that direction it was the natural way out (downhill) of the control but I should have been more aggressive than that. Bunch of orange controls to finish off with then another sprint finish win, I was stuffed before the control but again managed to pull something out, this time I was going for it, but still dont know where it came from.

Too many small hesitations due to struggling with map contact form plus the couple of mistakes.

Prime example of what not to do in an orienteering race. Dont know what the fuck was going on, wasn't reading the map, wasn't looking at anything, wasn't thinking. Finally got it together from the spectator onwards, also somehow won the finish spilt, which I was not consciously going for, very poor day out
