Hiking up Mt. McLoughlin with Sam and Presto!

After a night of camping, I'm actually starting to feel like I'm on vacation :-). We decided to head to the highest peak in southern Oregon, which claimed to be a walk-up with scrambling. The trail started out as a nice, gentle uphill stroll through some pretty nice woods for the first few miles. Then it decided it had had enough with this gradual stuff, and just turned directly uphill. I guess that's what happens with volcanoes... It was quite rocky and felt a little like NH, what with the rockiness and the fact that there was a slight amount of detectable humidity in the air. We made it above the treeline after a few hours and took a quick break for lunch.

The trail got significantly more difficult after lunch with lots of scree pumice-y stuff slipping around, lots of rocks to climb over, and minimal clarity as to where the trail was. There were lots of warnings not to detour off the ridge (apparently lots of people get lost that way) and to keep 4 mile lake in sight, but that was only sort of what the trail seemed to do. Presto got kind of stubbornly annoyed during this section of the hike and clearly was ready to turn around and go back down, but with a bit of coaxing, he made it up to a really spectacular summit.

The view would have been truly awesome if there had been less smoke. As it was, we could see Shasta off in the distance and the forest fires around Crater Lake. We met some people at the top who knew someone that used to be a grad student in my department, which was hilarious. They also gave us some cheese, which was spectacular. And then we trouped back down the mountain. Really awesome day!
