| NAOC Classic, Brown - 65, grey, wet and lots of big swamps!
This was an enjoyable event with interestingly mixed results. As for the O, it was some great, some good, some bad and one awful. So on the whole - fun and an amusing day. On the drive home, I kept thinking about how to summarize the day. As the Gov't is in the process of bailing out a lot of bankers for forgetting about the benefits to compounding interest, I speculated that compounding errors might deserve some kind of consideration as well, esp when the flagrant errors are basic to the activity. Listed in order of appearance for the primary culprit leg follows. Some of the more trivial errors on earlier legs, like planning the route, pace counting, paying attention to features, are left out because they are some of the normal lapses that could occur on any given day. So here goes: - Not paying attention to the map to see two trails heading off from the attackpoint. - Not paying attention to the compass as it swings 180 degrees from the desired direction. - Attacking off a good hard feature on the bearing determined by the above bearing. + Finally paying attention to the map and noticing that the control numbers are upside down from the big red bit of the compass! +- Retracing part of the track and then bushwacking, through green indistinct terrain to the correct terrain. ---- Attacking down a herd path without confirming that the attackpoint is indeed related at all to the specific course being run. - Finding a control at the end of the herd path and guessing what the feature was - Wrong one of course - It was 200m E rather than 120 m W. - Based upon that false premise and soft location, headed E until another soft location was found and turned around guessing at the current location. - Now spent a considerable time wandering in some indeterminant manner around the swamps, partially undetermined due to the fact that a significant part of this tour was off the little piece of map provided for our course. Eventually made it back to solid ground and with some assistance determined location. Unfortunately slowing down the helper and perhaps affecting the medal situation - sorry but supreme thanks. All the above was associated with #12 and generated approx 37' extra time in the swamps. Also trouble with: 5 - stopped short and wandered (-3'); 7 - Short again for about 45"; 8 - Misinterpreted the direction of the reentrant and searched on the wrong side (-4:30). On the plus side - Had the fastest splits to #3,6 and 11; second fastest to 4 and third fastest to 9 and 10. Small victories among a major brain fart. Regardless it was a great weekend and fun event. And believe it or not, twice the time in the swamp would be better than the alternative. 9/30/08 - Added the infamous route

| After some interesting discussion at the Finish about the Tour de Swamp, started to walk back to parking with Rick and Susie. Started to get really cold and jogged back. Still energy left even after taking almost twice as long as necessary on the course. | ||

| Left the event early for the trip to Vermont and decided to partake of the advice from the Grand Philosopher of O, PG, and stopped for a burger and beer at a pub in Manchester, VT. The burger was delightful and dinner was extended as we watched the tail end of a Wash v Dallas football game. Although rather neutral to the former, I dislike the Cowboys, being Texans, so was quite happy to note that the Redskins were up by a few points. We didn't pay to much attention to the goings on, enjoying as we were the burger with chipotle sauce (where's the emphasis in that word?) until a couple minutes were left and the Cowboys brought the score to within 2 points with a kickoff possibility. So the whole 60 minute affair came down to a single kick that happened to have two important bounces to it: the first was a rather brilliant short kick by Dallas that bounced way up in the air and landed directly in the hands of a Dallas player, the second bounce was off the Dallas player's hands and directly out-of-bounds giving the ball over to Washington who could sit on the ball for the duration. Although we were in a nice pub, it was an after-ski pub after all. This definitely being an off-season, the brilliance of this situation was met with a collective yawn! On the other hand, we could only imagine the uproar that must have occurred in the company of one Kissy. And we were quite happy for her!;-} | ||

Was going to be an easy run to get loosened from Mon's run, legs sore and tight - should have stretched or yogaed, and take it easy leading into this big weekend. Plan was overtaken by circumstances, namely the body claimed to be tired and felt it. So was somewhat of a slog, but still a fine day in the woods - nothing beats it. AOWN - As we were heading out and standing at the end of our driveway - I explaining the unintended consequences of insulating the hot water pipes in the basement = much hotter water in the shower, Lyn spotted a hawk, possibly a red-tail, swoop onto a lower branch in the woods on the far side of our neighbor's yard. We watched a stand-off of several minutes as a grey squirrel in a nearby tree eyed the hawk which seemed to be looking for lunch. As the squirrel was about the same size as the hawk, I didn't think it was a candidate. Still when it made its move it went straight at the squirrel passing within a few feet and landing just beyond. Worked on something for a few minutes and then flew off across the street. Watched us run by.

| These are the days of much reflection. Today's run was a period of that as the run was such a slog. The lovely woods was not enough of a distraction to keep the thoughts from wandering. In this case it was a reflection on our circumstance and the interesting parallel of parents sending their child off to their first summer camp. How do you decide when it is a good age to go off, what is a good camp, is the child ready and will he have a good time? I went off to my first summer camp, Camp Woodstock for those that went to the last NEOC A-meet and stayed overnight, when I was 9. I have no recollection of why or if I had any input into the decision other than perhaps that a friend was going there. I remember hating it; being very home sick, and standing at the entrance waiting for parents on visitors day midway through; crying when they left. Just wanted to go home. (A restrain that has become less frequent around here recently - another story.) I went back, for all the same reasons as the first year, and on to another camp, Camp Pioneer - now a residential development, for 5 or 6 more years. Hopefully we can make an appropriate decision in this effort. And BTW, we never sent our kids to summer camp other than Bob going to a lacrosse camp at Yale for a few days, a decision that he initiated. | ||

| shoes: Salomon XA 2 | ||
| This gets a listing only because of:
AOWN - as I was mowing over the middle of the yard near a section I had mown about 15' earlier, I felt an electric sensation on my ankle. Knew immediately what it was and kept moving. Sure enough. In the previously mown section was a hole with lots of wasps (?) buzzing around looking for targets. As my ankle became useful again, still quite sore even now, I took a tomato cage from the garden that wasn't involved this summer in supporting tomatoes and placed it over the nest as a warning and reminder. They didn't seem to recognize the intrusion and left me alone. Then continued mowing. Need another ice-cube though.

| Waterfall Loop - 65, thin cloud cover.
We were able to get out in the afternoon after an "interview" and made the most by going for one of our favorite runs. Ran a nice cruise pace, fairly steady and comfortable though we knew it was a good effort. Had had a coffee/donut just after the interview about an hour earlier and that tended to make itself known but otherwise a fine run. The interview made it seem like there just possibly a light in the tunnel. This was with the facility's nurse evaluating the situation. Though M is much better now, she still has the memory problem. As the one incident was rather precipitous, it could be due to some ailment that caused her problems. That situation is being investigated in parallel to this effort and we should know soon. After congratulating us for the care of the recent years, she advised that she did not think it appropriate to be in an independent apartment living alone. Fortunately they are just starting a new limited program with 24 hr assistance available for this small unit. The assists would be there for meds, monitoring, help with general things as they try to figure out the most appropriate living situation. Probably the best solution - just takes more $$, but doesn't anything. Maybe we can apply as part of the mortgage bail-out.
