Grand Ridge out and back Sponge Effect. Despite nearly 3" of rain and wind over the weekend, as well as drizzle for most of the ride, the trails were in pretty good shape. Not once did I have to dismount because of a tree down across the trail.

Sycamore-Park Point Trail-Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (the first Chinook have arrived). For the first time since March, I have had three consecutive DOB's, and I really needed the rest. It's also the first time in awhile that Tracy and I went for nice walks three days in a row. 3.2m/291'/:59

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 3X All according to plan until...I fell during my third circuit around Soaring Eagle. I was riding well and wasn't really pushing it, but I lost front tire grip on some corner marbles. I haven't fallen for months, which is great considering the treacherous trail conditions and the huge hours I have ridden. That's the good news. The bad news is that it hurt, and I have some scrapes and bruises!

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle "Do you mind if I go around?" "Jesus Christ" was the reply. I think I offended the young dude's sense of downhill superiority. I wasn't riding fast, and I had quickly caught up to this guy on an easy section of trail on the north side of GR. After I went by, he commenced "racing" through a little more difficult trail section. I assume this was to make sure that the stranger (me) knew he was fast and I should not have asked to pass. This didn't last very long, as I sent him into another zip code when we got to a short but steep little climb. I never saw him again. I guess his downhill prowess wasn't good enough to enable him to catch up over the next ten minutes of so of mostly downhill riding.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle I never would have imagined...When I first started riding at Soaring Eagle, I didn't really like it and never thought I would take a KOM on a popular stretch of trail with a long downhill section. But there are good sight lines at SE, and that makes me comfortable letting it roll sometimes, and I love riding there.

Grand Ridge/Duthie/Soaring Eagle Tire deg. In Formula 1 racing, tire degradation happens rapidly. With MTB riding it takes so long that you don't really notice tire performance dropping off. But a new rear tire was a real shot in the arm today. I had more cornering, braking, and even climbing grip, and I took advantage of it. I've been giving up a lot of free speed!

Medina/Kirkland/Redmond "Total Compliment" As I went by a female rider, I called out, "Total compliment-great looking legs." Her smile and the exuberant tone of her reply assured me that she was not offended. It's all in the delivery...

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Competition/common sense/age ratio. A twenty-something rider started on the Step-it-up Trail just as I got there. Normally, I would have waited a few minutes, but I was going to exit the trail in a short distance to go to Soaring Eagle. Besides, he looked like he knew what he was doing. I wasn't trying to, but I quickly gained on him, and he increased his speed as he became aware that I was behind him. I came around a tight blind corner, and there he was in a pile of rubble. His front wheel was turned completely backwards, and as I waited, it took him a full 30 seconds to extricate himself from his bike frame. Luckily, the only thing injured was his pride. Perhaps he was destined to fall in that spot anyway (I highly doubt it), and riding over his head to stay ahead of a stranger had nothing to do with it.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle Double Decision Dilema. Sunday morning: local hills on the road bike, or ride MTB on crowded trails with the best dirt since May? Despite loving Sunday mornings on the road, I went MTB riding. After 19 straight days of riding, I had two consecutive DOB's for the first time since May. Deciding to take a DOB on a nice summer day to get much needed rest is a very hard decision for me... It was nice to have the energy to pedal hard when I wanted to, but the trails were too crowded to ride fast. Some of the things that made the day special: running into an out of control dog that was chasing me; nearly hitting a lady typing on her iPad; passing a dozen riders on the long climb up the north side of Grand Ridge; two well behaved horses at SE. Luckily, all of the riders I encountered had their shit together.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Let it rain, please. I want it to rain and lay some moisture down on our parched landscape, clear the CA fire generated smoke from the air, and to incentivize me to take a DOB. The last request is a little selfish, but today was my 19th straight day of riding.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle Happy Together. It's rare that I see somebody older than me riding MTB. Today I saw a couple that qualified, and they looked Happy Together on their bikes.

MTB 12:00 [1] 2.1 mi (10.5 mph) +190ft

Ride home from Tracy's softball game. Tracy had a double-header tonight, so I threw the bike in the car in case I wanted to leave early. I rode home after they lost the first game 13-1.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle MTB Type 2 Fun-is that even possible? Man, I was tired on the bike today. Even when riding downhill, a lot of the time my focus was on how bad I felt. Not good. With having both lousy energy and poor concentration, I cut my losses and skipped riding home back over GR. I should have taken a badly needed DOB today; that makes the riding Type 3 fun:(

S Lake WA CW/Mercer Island CCW E-bike and Obliteride. It's always fun to pass an E-bike, especially uphill. Judging by the size of the rider, despite not having an electric motor, I think I might have still had the edge with power/weight ratio. But I doubt this guy would be riding a bike without the motor, and anything that gets more people riding is great. By pure chance, I rode towards the Obliteride event, instead of having to ride through it. A few of the obliteriders were oblivious (riding on the wrong side of bike paths on blind corners, etc), but most of the riders looked like they knew what they were doing.

Maple Valley/Black Diamond/Covington/Newcastle Happy in the pasture and not ready for the glue factory. Last winter on Moneysmith Road I watched a horse really struggle to get up from the ground. He looked like he could die any day. Today he was standing and alert as I went by. I called out, and he looked right at me and seemed happy. Gotta love that.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle 2X Moisture! A very brief early morning shower helped the trail conditions, at least for the first half of the ride. Despite it being my 12th riding day in a row, I had better energy than I've had lately. A short and easy ride with Tracy yesterday helped.

GR/Duthie/Soaring Eagle "See you never again" As I rode through a rare Soaring Eagle kids MTB clinic, a little girl cheerily called out "See you never again". I replied "probably not," so her friends would know her cute line didn't go unacknowledged. If I wasn't so tired, I would have done another loop on the trails to see if I could prove her wrong.
