Running - trail race (Causeway ultra) 6:25:58 [4] 39.62 mi (9:45 / mi) +3424ft 9:00 / mi
shoes: Hoka Torrent

Felt strong for the first 27 miles which is the turnaround point. Time at this point was 3:45. I had been taking on plenty of gels and water up to them and energy levels felt good. I could tell something wasn’t right soon after this though and my stomach was starting to cramp on both sides. As I ran onto the beach at about 31 miles I didn’t even get the chance to stop before throwing up a lot of liquid. A surprising amount really and makes me think a lot of what I had taken in hadn’t actually digested. I got going straight after but a few moments later the same thing happened. This pattern continued for the next couple of miles. I then decided to stop for a while to try to reset so crouched at the side of the path and tried to make sure everything was out of my stomach. This actually worked and I was able to star moving quite well again. After this all I took on board was a few sips of water but energy levels felt fine. Ended up finishing in the same time as last year - 6:25 and 13th place. Thinking about all of this and some of the other ultras I have done, I think I need to practice at eating less along with taking in just some normal food rather than gels. Small sandwiches or something. I seem to feel best on an emptier stomach and then eating later in the race.

Running - trail (Easy/moderate ) 40:38 [3] 5.51 mi (7:22 / mi) +481ft 6:49 / mi
slept:6.5 shoes: Hoka Torrent

Run around Ballyboley Forest on a stunning evening, cool and still with sunset and a mini cloud inversion. Felt fantastic on this run from start to finish so ran a bit harder than easy pace at times, couldn’t help it!

Running - road (Easy) 54:43 [3] 7.09 mi (7:43 / mi) +208ft 7:31 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Another road run. Weather been very wet today so didn’t fancy the playing fields which would have been like a bog. Thought about the treadmill but opted just to run outside and actually really enjoyed it and felt really good in spite of getting a soaking and running into a blustery wind for large periods. In spite of the faster pace (than most of my easy runs) this was genuinely an easy and comfortable effort level.

Running - road (Easy) 1:25:59 [3] 11.0 mi (7:49 / mi) +359ft 7:35 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 - black

Kids hockey tournaments in the morning so wasn’t able to get out until late afternoon. Weather was mixed with some rain but still mild. Ran from home around roads and Ballyclare park. Kept effort levels easy and felt generally ok although perhaps a little tired during the last couple of miles.

Running - road (Easy) 59:11 [3] 7.62 mi (7:46 / mi) +274ft 7:31 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Easy road run from home. Sunny but windy morning. Ran along country roads down to Ballyclare then a few laps of a grass pitch then home. Felt good from the start today. Kept effort levels easy which meant slowing down on the way home as I ran into the wind.

Treadmill (Easy + treadmill hill rep) 1:02:15 [3] 7.0 mi (8:54 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: Nike Epic react (blue)

Treadmill hill session with 1 less rep than the last couple of weeks. Increased speed slightly again for the hill reps (now at 8:50 mm pace according to my treadmill). Found these tough but enjoyable as usual. Enjoyable in that it feels good to work hard and complete a session that I know is really benefiting my running. Legs are feeling at little fatigued at present, the easy week ahead should resolve that. I can definitely feel quite a bit of difference running hills now compared to a few months ago - I am noticeably stronger.

Running - Grass (Easy) 45:37 [3] 5.52 mi (8:16 / mi) +104ft 8:07 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 - black

Easy run around Mallusk playing fields followed by 6 strideouts in the car park. Sunny and still evening. Legs felt awful at the start of this (I had done the usual warm up after getting ready) although they did loosen up after a while. Kept it really easy throughout.

Running - mixed terrain (Moderate/ tempo) 1:14:55 [4] 11.06 mi (6:46 / mi) +419ft 6:32 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 - black

Delayed flight so went to one of the Stansted hotels who let me use their facilities for £5. Looked on the map and seen a forest about 3 miles away so decided to run there, explore the forest and run back. Beautiful sunny and warm afternoon with little wind. Felt good so pushed the pace a hit harder and probably beyond a moderate effort at some points. Enjoyed this.

Easy run around the London parks on a warm evening. Felt ok, legs a little stiff but loosened up throughout the run and at times I was in a nice rythym

Running - trail (Specific endurance ) 3:59:53 [3] 26.01 mi (9:13 / mi) +2854ft 8:21 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR 5 (blue)

Usual out and back route from portballintrae on a dull and windy morning with some drizzle. Really didn’t feel great at the beginning and was even tempted to call it quits and turn back but persevered taking it easy and things improved significantly as I went on. It was a tale of two halfs as the second half of the run was very good. Ended up with my quickest run on this route! I think some of the hill work is paying off as I felt strong on the inclines. In terms of fuel I took 4 gels, two bottles of tailwind, a packet of clif shots and a 500ml bottle of coke. Didn’t start fuelling until about an hour into the run as I had really just had breakfast. Really pleased with this run in spite of the dodgy start, particularly as it comes at the end of a 73 mile week.

Running - trail (Moderate ) 1:15:25 [3] 10.26 mi (7:21 / mi) +829ft 6:50 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Torrent

Moderate paced run around Ballyboley Forest. Windy but dry and cool. Not sure how to describe this as at times I felt good and other times not so good.

Running - Grass (Easy) 1:01:54 [2] 7.37 mi (8:24 / mi) +174ft 8:13 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 - black

Easy run around Mallusk playing fields. Felt pretty grim for most of this run, never really was at a point where I felt totally comfortable. Legs felt stiff at the outset despite having done the usual leg swings, lunges and calf raises before setting off.

Treadmill (Easy + hill reps) 1:13:00 [3] 8.0 mi (9:07 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Epic react (blue)

Same session as the last couple of weeks with the 4 x 5 mins @ 10% incline but increased speed again slightly on the hill reps. Slightly below 9m/m now. This is the best I’ve felt doing these so far and could probably have increased the pace further.

6 PM

Running - road 1:02:02 [3] 7.78 mi (7:58 / mi) +224ft 7:46 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 - black

Easy road run around home. Felt a bit crap for the first couple of miles. Perhaps as it had been a busy and quite stressful day. Stopped for a toilet break and felt a lot better after, it almost seemed like I had hit a reset button just by stopping for a minute or two then getting going again. Finished feeling quite good.

Running - trail (Easy + hill reps) 1:04:55 [3] 6.46 mi (10:03 / mi) +1888ft 7:52 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus 36 Trail

Loop of Cavehill with the 6 x 1 min hill reps in the middle. Blustery and wet tonight so not too pleasant on the exposed sections of the hill however I ran up and over from the car park and down the other side of the hill into the forest to do the hill reps which was much more sheltered. Legs felt a bit crap at the outset, the first mile or so was a steady climb, but were fine on the flat and downhills. Found the hill reps tough on what was a steep section of trail. Particularly reps 4 to 6. The last part felt fine, ie. the easy run / cooldown which itself included quite a bit more climb which I took as easy as possible.

Running - Grass (Easy) 1:00:00 [3] 7.32 mi (8:12 / mi) +182ft 8:01 / mi
slept:7.5 shoes: Hoka Torrent

Easy run around both sets of playing fields in Mallusk (joined up by a short section of road). Decent dry evening with some wind. Felt ok although a bit tired/lethargic. The grass was quite long and soggy in parts.

Running - trail (Moderate ) 1:54:39 [3] 15.54 mi (7:23 / mi) +1068ft 6:56 / mi
slept:7.5 shoes: Hoka Torrent

Run in Woodburn Forest. Early start due to plans for a family day trip. Great day for running again with hardly any wind and not too warm. Felt really good from the off and this lasted until about the last 20 mins or so when I tired. Ran in new shoes - Hoka Torrent - which I liked. Another good week of training under my belt.
NB. No food or water on this run.

Running - road (Easy) 1:06:11 [3] 8.39 mi (7:53 / mi) +278ft 7:39 / mi

Easy road run from home around the roads and ballyclare park. Perfect running weather with little wind and cool temps. Legs felt a little heavy.

5 PM

Treadmill (Easy + treadmill hill rep) 1:13 [4] 8.0 mi (9 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Did this one on the treadmill again. Legs felt a bit heavy initially but loosened up during the initial warm up. Added one extra point of speed from last week to the 10% hill reps (approx 7 secs per mile on my treadmill) and it felt tough but quite good at the same time. Glad when the 4th one was finished though. As usual, the easy cool down run felt great at 2% incline!

Running - trail (Easy/moderate ) 1:01:29 [3] 6.47 mi (9:30 / mi) +1374ft 7:55 / mi
slept:7.0

Went for a run up around Cavehill and the adjacent quarry straight after work. It had been quite a hard day in work and didn’t fancy running the flat loops around the playing fields. Felt ok, tried to keep it as easy as possible although still breathing hard at times on the steeper climbs.

Running - road hills (Easy + 60s hill reps) 1:05:23 [3] 8.25 mi (7:56 / mi) +575ft 7:26 / mi
slept:5.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2 - black

Fairly late one due to being in London for the day for work. Got some sleep on the plane home which helped. Did the session pretty much as scheduled with just over 20 mins for the warmup, 6 x 60 sec hill reps with approx 3 mins easy jogging in between and another 20 mins easy running after. Felt good tonight and enjoyed running in a new pair of shoes - Nike Pegasus Turbo 2. The last 10 to 15 seconds of each hill rep was tough and I had to stop at the top each time for maybe 20 seconds to get my breath back before jogging down again.

slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Easy run around Victoria Park with 8 x 30 sec speed variations followed by a sports massage. Felt slightly better than yesterday but still a bit lethargic. Heavy rain for the most part although thankfully only lightish winds.

Running - Grass (Easy) 1:00:01 [2] 7.1 mi (8:27 / mi) +241ft 8:11 / mi
slept:7.0

Easy run around Mallusk playing fields followed by 6 strideouts. One of those runs I didn’t really feel like doing in crap wet/windy weather and a fairly uninspiring location with hardly anyone else around. Felt a bit stodgy, legs were fine but just felt a general tiredness. I guess that’s to be expected after a fairly big weekend. Strideouts felt good though.

Running - trail (Specific endurance LCDR) 2:59:31 [3] 20.01 mi (8:58 / mi) +3076ft 7:50 / mi
slept:8.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus 36 Trail

Out and back from Portballintrae on the usual route except this time I added in an additional climb to the usual route by running down into the giants causeway at sea level and then back up the path/steps onto the trail again. Weather was horrendous at times with strong winds throughout and the odd downpour. At one point I had to crouch down beside the fence for a minute or two for fear of being blown over! The paths were also muddy with some of them having turned into streams in places. Did the first two hours without any fuel as planned, drinking a little water only. Was beginning to tire at the 2 hour mark although this also coincided with the toughest part of this route with a fairly sustained climb. Took 3 gels during the third hour and got a new lease of life, finishing the run strongly.
