Running - road (Moderate) 1:18:34 [3] 11.03 mi (7:07 / mi) +508ft 6:50 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Epic react (blue)

Very windy morning so stuck to the roads for this one. Ran out and back with the wind predominantly in my face on the way out and on my back on the return. Felt pretty good, particularly on the way back. It was nice to run a bit faster than on recent runs. Decent run I think.

Treadmill (Easy) 1:00:00 [2] 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Opted for the treadmill for two reasons. One a was the horrendous weather and two was the fact that I wanted to watch the UTMB coverage :-)
Felt fine with nothing out of the ordinary to report!

Treadmill (Easy + hill reps) 1:10:00 [3] 7.36 mi (9:31 / mi)
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Went for the treadmill again as I think its a good session to do on there. Felt a good bit better this week compared to last week although I knew what pace to run at from the first effort. Still found it fairly tough going although I think next time round i could push the pace up a little. As before the cool down easy run felt like I was floating, totally effortless!

Running - Grass (Easy + hill sprints) 1:04:44 [2] 8.21 mi (7:53 / mi) +226ft 7:41 / mi
slept:7.0

Easy run around Mallusk playing fields with the 6 hill sprints out on a nearby road after 30 mins. Felt good tonight after yesterday’s rest day which was much needed for mind and body! Nice evening for running too with cool temps and a light breeze. Followed by a massage.

Note
(rest day)

Decided to take a total rest day. Feeling stiff and tired most of the day.

Running - mixed terrain (Moderate ) 2:02:36 [3] 15.59 mi (7:52 / mi) +833ft 7:29 / mi
slept:9.5

Out and back run along the portrush to Portstewart coastal trails. Another warm day with a moderate breeze. Got up after a long sleep (much needed) got a small breakfast then spent some time stretching, doing calf raises, lunges, leg swings and press ups before setting off. Had felt quite stiff on getting up this morning (possibly the result of an impromptu 5 a side football match on the caravan site yesterday) and it took a few miles to get loosened up. Took these first few miles easy then increased the effort level to moderate after that. Had to do quite a lot of people dodging at times due to the bank holiday. Middle section of the run felt best and then I tired towards the end although I still managed to maintain a similar pace. Only took a 250 ml bottle of water in my hand on the run so was really thirsty when I finished due to the warm weather.

Running - mixed terrain (Easy / moderate ) 54:19 [3] 7.13 mi (7:37 / mi) +282ft 7:21 / mi
slept:6.0

Flew back from Liverpool and headed straight up to Portrush as we were staying in the caravan for a few days over the bank holiday. Ran out of time to do two hours due to family commitments so just got roughly an hour in and will do the two hours tomorrow morning (I’m off work Monday and Tuesday). Ran up the coast road and down the trail then along the beach (where a large dog took a dislike to me resulting in a standoff for a few minutes). Planned to do this as an easy run and it felt mostly comfortable and easy although the pace was a good bit quicker than normal easy running pace for me. I guess that’s a good thing though. Another hot day albeit with a fairly strong wind.

Running - road (Easy) 1:04:15 [2] 8.02 mi (8:01 / mi) +6ft 8:00 / mi
slept:5.0 shoes: Nike Epic react (blue)

Over in Liverpool for 24 hours as part of a work thing to watch the football. Got to the hotel and headed out straight away. Found a path beside the river Mersey very close to the hotel so did an out and back run along there which was great. Very flat. Really warm day so ended up running topless. Felt really good in spite of the heat, not having had much sleep and not long got off the flight.

Treadmill (Easy + 5 min hill reps) 1:10:00 [4] 7.52 mi (9:19 / mi)
slept:7.0

Did the session with 4 x 5 min at 10% on the treadmill due to time constraints. Found it extremely tough going during the reps. During the first 5 min rep I thought to myself I was not going to manage 4 (although I did). I did have to reduce the pace during the first one from 8m/m to around 9m/m. Not sure my treadmill is correctly calibrated but this effort level felt more appropriate and sustainable. A good benchmark for next time. The cooldown easy run at 2% incline felt fantastic!

Running - road (Easy) 1:01:00 [3] 7.62 mi (8:00 / mi) +250ft 7:46 / mi
slept:7.0

Easy run around roads with a couple of laps around the pitches at Ballyclare leisure centre. Followed by strideouts. Felt similar to the last couple of runs, a bit tired and lethargic. Probably not helped by the 5 hour delay to my flight home from London last night. It was also quite warm and muggy with a fairly strong wind, not the most pleasant conditions.

Running - mixed terrain (Easy) 1:02:02 [2] 7.52 mi (8:15 / mi) +227ft 8:01 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Got a notification that my flight was delayed so paid for a day pass at a pure gym near Victoria station so I could get a run done. Didn’t fancy the treadmill so just used the facilities for a shower and somewhere to put my bags. Warm day in London with temps of 22 degrees. Ran out around the parks again and just kept it easy as (a) there aren’t any hills around there and (b) I wasn’t really feeling it. Didn’t feel bad per se but didn’t particularly feel like I wanted to exert myself either. Felt a good bit better by the end of the run though.

Running - mixed terrain (Easy + speed variations ) 1:11:11 [3] 9.17 mi (7:46 / mi) +248ft 7:34 / mi
slept:4.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Ran from my hotel in London around St James Park, Green Park and Hyde park. Started the speed variations approx 20 mins into the run. Didn’t exactly feel fantastic on this one, a bit tired and sluggish to start. The faster portions injected a bit of life into it though and a couple of times I had to remind myself to slow down and that it wasn’t a fartlek with roll ons!

Treadmill (Easy) 1:00:00 [2] 6.44 mi (9:19 / mi)
slept:7.5

Easy run on treadmill as my wife was out and I needed to stay in the house with the kids. Felt fine, no issues with the legs after yesterday. Not sure my treadmill is correctly calibrated as the pace it shows feels a lot different from running outside. I guess it doesn’t really matter though as it was about getting an easy hour of running done.

Running - trail (Specific endurance ) 3:23:13 [3] 22.28 mi (9:07 / mi) +2825ft 8:09 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR 5 (blue)

Went to bed early (before 11pm) but didn’t sleep much as the wind and rain was noisily battering the caravan all night. Got up at 7am, had a small bowl of cereal and coffee and drove round to portballintrae. Ran the usual out and back route with the exception of a slight detour as the tide was in so I couldn’t get back along the rocks at the end of whitepark bay. Ran up the trail to the road, along the road a bit then back down to the trail. This probably added a few hundred feet of climbing so might do this again in future. Really wet and windy day, the sort of wind that makes you feel you are treading water at times but it didn’t bother me as much as it usually would. The rain was also sandblasting my face at times! Felt really good today which was particularly pleasing as this has been a higher mileage week. Fuelling went well. Drunk 2 x 500 ml bottles of water and took 9 gels. No sickness and plenty of energy throughout.

Easy run around portrush taking in a couple of miles on the beach as well as some trails. Very windy but found it refreshing. Enjoyable run and felt good, a little tired on the hills though.

slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Pegasus 36 Trail

Did the session around Cavehill as planned with 3 x 5 min hill reps. First of these felt horrendous and really slow, the next two I felt a bit stronger. Tough session.

Running - Grass (Easy) 59:19 [3] 7.05 mi (8:25 / mi) +165ft 8:14 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Nike Epic React (beige)

Easy run around mallusk playing fields with 6 strideouts to finish. Didn’t feel great during this, always just felt like a struggle and never seemed to get into a relaxed stride. Grass was a bit long and soggy in parts. The strideouts made me feel better.

slept:7.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Rainy and cool evening. Felt a bit crappy during the first 20 min easy run, in stark contrast to last night. Felt much better during the 6 hill reps though and then also during the second 20 min easy run.

Running - road (Easy) 49:20 [3] 6.1 mi (8:05 / mi) +193ft 7:51 / mi
slept:6.0 shoes: Nike Epic react (blue)

Got out for a late run after getting my flight home from London. Took this one easy after last nights run and as it was late. Felt really great on this run, I can’t really remember ever feeling better during a run! It was virtually effortless. The fact that I had a sleep on the plane may have helped and also the cool temperatures and little wind. Nice feeling nonetheless.

Running - road (Easy/tempo) 1:19:00 [3] 10.05 mi (7:52 / mi) +200ft 7:43 / mi
slept:7.0

In London for meetings. Got checked in to the hotel then straight out for a run. Intended to run down to the river and do an out and back but the south bank was chaos and lots of people dodging so went over Westminster bridge and intended to do a loop on the quieter roads and parks before heading back the same way. Got a bit lost on the loop which led to this being a longer run than intended!! Had to ask for directions to get back in track and then, being annoyed with myself, sped up significantly for a couple of miles running at 6:30mm pace on the way back to the hotel. Had felt really good on this run before that and was settled into a comfortable easy pace from the start. The faster miles actually felt pretty good, it was nice to get it out of my system!

Out back run along the coastal trails between portrush and Portstewart. Nice cool day with showers/drizzle and not too much wind. Took two 500ml bottles of water. Felt great for the most part, kept it fairly relaxed and comfortable. Started to feel tired for the last few miles but managed to maintain the same pace, albeit with a greater perceived effort level.

Went up to Woodburn Forest for this run. Heavy rain but warm enough. Felt really good for the most part although the last 5 mins of the fartlek were quite tough.

Easy run around Cavehill plus 6 hill sprints. Fancied somewhere different and hadn’t been up here for a while. Enjoyed it but found the steeper hills quite hard going.

Running - road (Easy) 58:04 [2] 7.19 mi (8:05 / mi) +205ft 7:52 / mi

Easy road run followed by 6 strideouts. Feeling tired today as I was at a wedding evening do last night but still had to get up to go into work at the usual time. Had a sleep when I got home before going out for the run. Felt really good on this run and was tempted to go faster but held myself back. Finished with 6 strideouts which felt great. Run was 5 or 10 mins and up to a mile longer than shown - my watch ran out of battery!

Running - road (Easy) 1:03:37 [3] 7.62 mi (8:21 / mi) +234ft 8:07 / mi
slept:8.0

Easy road run. First mile or two didn’t feel so great but eventually got into a nice rythym and was feeling pretty good at the end. I had completed my loop after around 60 mins and it started raining heavily so I decided not to go any further.

Running - mixed terrain race (Causeway Challenge race) 3:39:17 [4] 26.75 mi (8:12 / mi) +1930ft 7:40 / mi
slept:5.0 shoes: Hoka Rincon (white/blue)

Causeway Challenge race (also known as More Than a Marathon) which starts in Ballycastle and runs along the coast to finish in Portrush. First few miles were mainly on road (aside from a short beach and a few short trail sections) before heading down onto the main Causeway coast trail that I run on frequently. It then came back out onto the road for a couple of miles at portballintrae then down the trail onto the beach with 1.5 miles up the beach to the finish.
Started off feeling great and stuck with a lead group of 6 or 7 for the first couple of miles. There were quite a few climbs on the initial roads and I decided to back off after a while as I knew what lay ahead. Settled into my own pace and ran pretty much on my own for the next 25 miles. The heat was causing me to sweat profusely so I was picking up bottles of water at each station. I had brought my Salomon backpack with two bottles of tailwind and 6 SIS gels to take throughout. Whenever we hit the hillier trail action my legs felt a little weak but I was able to keep running at a reasonable pace. I had picked off a couple of other runners before half way. For the rest of the trail section up until portballintrae the pattern of running well on the flats and downhills and feeling weak on the climbs continued. When the route went out onto the roads agin after portballintrae I didn’t feel so great. There was approx 6 miles to go at this point. I took another gel but it didn’t seem to make an awful lot of difference to my energy levels. Pleasingly though I was able to keep running at around 8mm pace. I was still passing a fair few runners at this point (and not getting passed by anyone) but it was hard to tell who was who as there was also a half marathon and 10k on the same route. After descending onto the beach I felt good again and was able to pick up the pace a bit and passed another few runners. Guessing that I finished 5th or 6th as the results haven’t been posted yet. In terms of fuelling, I drunk two bottles of tailwind and took 4 gels. Couldn’t stomach the other two I had with me. Need to order more spring energy gels as those SIS ones aren’t great. Spring energy are quite difficult to get hold of in UK.
