Billygoat - 2020 DIY edition. We were able to go visit Nate for the weekend before Luke's goes back to school (well, from his bedroom at home, since RPI is not allowing Sophomores on campus this semester - they will replace the Juniors in the Spring), and the fine folks at WCOC had the (Sol-O) Billygoat ready to go for this weekend. We did our own mass start but I could not keep up with Nate. Luke and Christine also did the first loop behind me, then Luke continued until he fell and injured himself. Meanwhile, I skipped C5 and was ahead of Nate until I overshot C11 and he caught me. He went left to C12 so he could stop for water, while I went right. I did not execute well and he got ahead of me and it was over. I thought I had some energy left, but my splits to C15 and C16 show otherwise.

Other misses: lost over a minute on C8 stopping short and left, and probably lost a minute and a half not getting high enough for C16.

Took a day completely off ahead of the Billygoat tomorrow.

Apparently, it may have been frowned upon if I had visited a public park today. The hash today was a reverse prom hash, which is not what I needed, so options A + B were out, and option C was in. I went for quantity, not quality and headed to the Hojack trail at Drumm Rd. Poured on the way there, but the rain mostly took a break while I ran (well, 3 min jog / 1 min walk, 8 times east, then back). When I got back to the car, I was at 5.65 miles, so said, screw it, let's make it a 10K day. The out and back was done very easy.

Lots of wildlife on the Hojack, scared up 3 deer before Klem on the way out and one on the other side of Klem on the way back. And it seems that rabbits, well, let's just say they've been doing the rabbit thing.

Crushed the 10K record on my Garmin, beating: 2:56:23 from 5/3.

Golfing 15:00 [3]
weight:170lbs

Awful round, featuring a 9 on 6 after going OB, and a 47 overall - couldn't do anything right. We held onto the lead overall, but I think next week is the final position night for all the marbles, so I'll have to be better.

ahr:130 max:150 weight:171lbs

Serious Schroeder XC captain's practices started yesterday, and we provided this week's workouts to the kids. Today called for a mile time trial, and they were doing it near the campground at Webster Park, so I biked up there to check things out. The top boy broke 5 and the top girl was 5:22 with a teammate just a few seconds behind. They knocked off a couple of 5 min tempo efforts afterwards, with a short break.

Despite the state announcing that XC official practices can start on 9/21, we have no idea what the season will look like (other than no state meet, sadly). I like the idea of wave starts for our league meets with perhaps 3 kids from each team in each wave. Although some of our girls meets could run everyone at once, based on last year.

Biked home. Slower since it was uphill from the lake, and my legs were weary. Had to kick it in to get over a 15 mph average.

Running 1:00:14 intensity: (1:30 @1) + (9:24 @2) + (18:50 @3) + (29:16 @4) + (1:14 @5) 4.69 mi (12:51 / mi) +55m 12:24 / mi
ahr:138 max:159 weight:171lbs

Legs were heavy from yesterday, but I'm probably not running again until Thursday, so I needed to get some steps in for my team at work. I decided to try for an hour at 4 min jog / 1 min walk. That turned out to be doable, despite the heat, but you can see how slow it was, despite some elevated (for me) heart rate. Obviously the terrain had an impact: from Big Field lot, did the Meadow trail to Pellet, then white, red(c), green (c, but cc at loop), brown(c), blue (cc), orange(cc), red(c), white, big woods and in.

Knocked off another 15.8 miles of canal trail. Christine dropped me off in Spencerport and I rode the canal to where I had turned around at Edgewood, then took roads home for the other 8 miles.

Stayed on the roads this evening and was rewarded with my fastest ride on this bike, averaging over 17.5mph, even with some lights where I had to slow without stopping the watch. The bibs are doing great, too; I didn't notice any discomfort on the seat today.

RH3 in the city on the evening before RH turns 69. Nacho and Messiah set some by car so they didn't realize how long they made the trail. I didn't mind.

Golfing 15:00 [3]
weight:172lbs

Played the back 9. For each of the first six holes I found a way to give a stroke away (10: pulled third shot left from just 100; 11: poor chip; 12: poor chip; 13: 3-putt; 14: missed green from 100; 15: missed short putt) and bogeyed each, but pulled it together on the last three holes and parred out for a 42. Hit 5 of 7 fairways, just missing on 12 and missing right on 15, but with a clear shot to the green.

Rode into the city today, but came back to Empire on Winton to avoid the 590 intersection on Empire. Looks like I exceeded 35 mph coming down Empire. I was much slower going down Blossom earlier after hitting a little pothole that I didn't see and almost losing control.

Changed the HR avg/max to the Fitbit reading from the other wrist as it seemed more reasonable. I think the Forerunner was too loose on my wrist.

Went down to Mendon for a longer run (well, jog/walk for 5 min/1 min cycles). Did a southern loop and had to go off-trail early, then made a wrong turn on a trail so I went clockwise instead of counter-clockwise around the southern pond. Added one loop when I got back, but then still had a couple of minutes to go to make it an hour.

RH3 from Irondequoit. Had to subtract some time and distance that accumulated while I was in Mudman's pool after the first mile. We then wrapped up at Lake Ontario where the conditions were perfect for some time in the lake.

Golfing 15:00 [3]

Mostly good off the tee, except on the par 5 5th where I went OB, but re-teed, hitting three and hit to 175, then onto the green with 2 putts for a bogey. Hit to 30 yards on 9 and took a bogey, 3-putted for bogey on both par 3s, including on #5 where I hit the stick in the air on my tee shot, almost swishing it. So I only wound up with a 43.

ahr:137 max:163 weight:170lbs

Too warm for a real workout, so I went to the Hojack for a heat-adjusted tempo effort. Descended the mile times: 9:43, 9:38, 9:15, then came thru 5K in 29:39 for a new record (but only a few seconds faster than 7/24 where I walked 3 minutes during the 5K).

Right hip was a bit sore afterwards, complaining that I didn't take the usual walking breaks today.

ahr:139 max:158 weight:173lbs

Easy-ish run at Whiting Rd. Brought my phone and listened to an 80s alternative compliments of Alexa. Ran until the end of each song, with a minimum of 3 minutes, then walked for 30 seconds. Quite a few short songs up front, but then Teen Age Riot kicked in right as I got to the hilly part of the Red trail.

Overall, covered Blue-Black-Orange-Pink-Orange (again)-Red-Green-Brown-Yellow-Blue and in. Had to go the other way on Blue to get to 45 minutes.

Was able to double my distance covered on the canal trails today, thanks to Luke's help. We drove out between Lyons and Clyde and were able to find the spot where the trail popped out onto Old Rt 31 and Luke dropped me there then drove to Pal-Mac Aqueduct Park and waited for me.

After a short crushed stone section of trail, I hit the "natural" section which required much vigilance and care as it was a grassy trail with plenty of roots and I had visions of Coop's accident as I negotiated that stretch, and it took 15 minutes to cover the first three miles. Finally saw someone on the trail around mile 8, and near mile 9 the trail pops out onto Old Lyons Road, which I found insulting. I had a brief navigation error or two when the trail went on/off roads in Lyons and Newark, but not too bad. When I got to the park, I had to continue to the next road where I had turned around coming from Fairport, and now have just over 40 continuous miles covered.

Ride was slower than expected because I was heading into the wind the whole way, but had to go in that direction to make it easy for Luke to drive to the end and the eastern terminus for today was not well-defined. The wind wasn't a huge factor but was definitely noticeable at times.

ahr:131 max:152 weight:171lbs

Short run/walk in Ellison Wetlands before driving over to EA to catch Huntz and Wilbur (and his kids) while they were still in town. No regimented plan this time, but if I was around 5 minutes of jogging and hit a bigger hill, I took the opportunity to walk for a bit.

Nice, calm ride after work, but not as slow as I had thought (kept it quite flat). Wore the special old lady sunglasses that the doc gave me to protect my eyes, and good thing since at least two big bugs bounced off of them.

Eye update: now able to read at least as well with right eye as left, and colors remain more vivid with the right eye. I'm liking this new lens, so far!

RH3 from Kreag Rd Park, set by Messiah and Nacho. Wasn't going to hash tonight because of the eye surgery yesterday, but the doc said it was OK this AM (OK, he said jogging was OK, but I also wasn't expecting to cover 7.4 miles).

ahr:133 max:160 weight:168lbs

Easy-ish run on the Hojack trail from North Ponds Park after running some errands in Webster after work. Did 3 min jog / 1 min walk cycles. Averaged about 9:25 pace on the jog sections, including 8:37 on the penultimate jog.

Back to Fairport to ride on the canal, but went almost 10 miles west this time, instead of east. Edgewood was just a hair under 10 miles away, and provided a great place to turn around, as I can park there and continue my quest (but I plan to drive to Palmyra and continue the eastern push first).

Weight back down today from yesterday's exercise, after the bump up from Christine's lasagna on Friday night.

Drove over and met Walt, Party and PJ at Chestnut Ridge for some Map Hike fun (PJ was only doing the second half of that). I cleared the east side, then went up the road and cut thru a small cemetery that I had never noticed before, to get to a control on the west side, then picked up two more on the way back.

Clearing the east side is actually an exaggeration, as I never found #5, despite attacking twice from different 100% known locations within 60m of the control. Walt and Party also failed to find it. #4 was definitely in the wrong location, too far north - easy to tell from the adjacent field.
