Event: West Point

Orienteering race 2:15:00 [3] *****

Started off on the wrong foot the first day. Missed the start time due to a number of reasons which lead to no focus from the start. Combination of Rain and Fog made things very interesting since visibility was almost nil in some areas. Pretty much bobbled around all morning with significant erros on the majority of controls. 4th in the Category.

Orienteering race 40:00 [4] ***

Sprint. After finishing the Classic went right out and did the sprint. Bad idea since i was pretty tired already. Again lack of concentration and overshot the 2nd control. The middle and killer climb at the end finished me off, also should have attacked 14 better. Hammer looked like a mountain goat and just flew up that hill.

Orienteering 25:00 [1]

School-O control pickup with Strack-Attack.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] ***

Ancaster Creek Score-O. Skipped 3, probably would have gotten them if i attacked other controls cleaner. No real big problem but wasted some time trying to cross the creek and finding the ribbons (really need a different colour for me like yellow or blue) a couple times the ribbon was flying right in front of me.

Note

Going to be a couple of really late nites before West Point to "try" to finish a paper for friday. Hopefully that won't totally kill me for the weekend. I like sleep.

Run 1:15:00 [2]

Escarpment Rally with Griz, Pillar and Hammer. Ran both loops at an moderate pace. Tired from the past couple of days and wanted to keep a consistant speed and time. Both loops just over 36 mins.

Sunday Apr 17, 2005 #

Orienteering 1:20:00 [3] ***

Gators Spring Tune-up. Farsta course (3 maps-3 loops). Lots of running and a contours only at the end. Used the session as a map reading exercise, lost a little focus on the second loop and took slowly on the contours only.

Run 10:00 [1]

Warm up with Pillar

Bike 2:00:00 [3]

Home-Ancaster-Railtrail to Copetown bog and back-Chedoke-Home. Almost 40km of biking. Hills hurt.

Run warm up/down 35:00 [2]

Run 20:00 [4]

Try to run the first loop fast. Just under 20min. Not bad for a tough rocky loop. The switchback and climbs on the second Bruce portion was tough...very rocky back there. Noticed i was only about three minutes back from Hammer and the Griz (yeah i always get dropped but not too bad for the first loop!)

Note

Offically tried to register for West Point today.
M-Red Saturday to save some legs for the Sprint
Blue M21+ Sunday
Should be good experience for me overall. Only real major A event i've done was GLOF 2003. Plan to do more next year for sure.

Run warm up/down 25:00 [1]

15 on my own to loosen the legs since Sunday. ~10 with Hammer before the sprint

Orienteering 20:00 [4] ***

Spring Valley Sprint. 19min exactly by my watch. Stopped for 1min or so to help Ms. Henderson orient herself (a little disoriented!). Could have attacked a little cleaner on 2 controls but overall happy with the performance considering i'm still feeling the effects from Sun. Sprinted Full on from that last control to try to catch Glen, he just beat me in! He had a good half a minute on me coming into the last 3 controls!

Orienteering race 4:10:00 [3] ***

DGL Giant's Rib Raid. 11th overall. Unfortunately only my last big long race of the season due to school obligations. Felt not too bad considering, i think we pretty much pushed it all the way when we (I) could!

I see a number of positives from the result:

1. Although the weakest runner on the team, i was happy that the legs didn't crap out this time around, really sluggish at the end but not like the pain experienced in the past. Means that all the TNT work this winter has paid dividens and has increased endurance at least.
2. Coming 11th next to Foster - a damn fine moral victory
3. TIny did most if not all the navigation...your good buddy that should increase your confidence for AR one of your main games. I'm like a proud father! But seriously, good job.
4. Finally, a good show by all GHO members and associates.

Run 40:00 [2]

Summer TNT route. Pretty technical running, lots of rocky stuff and some woods running. Just did the warm-up loop, felt pretty strong eventhough intensity wasn't high. Saving the rest for weekend. Time to rest and Carb load.

Bike 1:20:00 [2]

Nice easy pace to school-hammers-school-home. Legs getting use to the bike again...so is the arse...ouch to numb-bum due to bike seat.

Note

Feeling pretty good the past couple of days, will have to taper after tomorrow. Haven't decided if i want to run TNT...i do it will be just the warm up loops.

Run warm up/down 45:00 [2]

Run intervals 30:00 [4]

Rez run. 2 on 1 off x 10 with a longer rest in the middle. Legs a little tired, more or less the hammies from biking plus didn't want to injure myself due to the rocky trail run before Sunday. Still don't think i could've kept up with Pillar, Hammer, Griz, Fossil and Snipes.

Bike 1:00:00 [3]

Fast bike to Mac-Hammer-Home. Hurt both ways due to the first time since fall on the bike and high winds plus Hills on the way home! Should have cut the intensity back a bit but wanted to feel the wind in the hair! Ahh bike muscles, i remember you!

Saturday Apr 2, 2005 #

Note

Crazy wintery weather might make getting a long run this weekend impossible. Not really in the mood to contend with this mixed precip. and high winds and get sick in the process. Whacky weather!

Run 35:00 [2]

Felt a little sluggish out there but surprisingly cut about 5mins off the normal time, must be the lack of snow increasing the running time. First day out in shorts though, pretty thrilled about that. Tomorrow calls for snow, go figure.
